Finally got my trich seedling and a few questions
    #9489277 - 12/24/08 03:11 PM (4 years, 4 months ago)

After trial and error I finally got my first trich seed to pop. The question is now what do I do with it? There is only one out of 45. I know the roots tend to rot easily. How long can it remain in high humidity. Should I extract it from the rest still germinating? Or will it be fine in there with there?

Leave it there, i think you wait a few months before acclimating them to room humidity and even that is done slowly.

couple of months in high humidity then just take them out...
leave them together until they become over crowded then repot...

open the chamber and circulate the air as often as possible, i'm lazy and my current seedlings are lucky to get fresh air once a week...

you can graft seedlings at a matter of days old but i recommend that you wait until they are st least a few weeks old and big enough to handle...

growing cacti really is that easy :yesnod:

When you make the cut for the graft scion do you drag the blade across it or push it down?

well you don't want to crush or bruise the tissue at all so i guess the action could be described as a bit of both, slight slicing action with applied pressure.

-Uare

wow. I open mine atleast once a day just to check on them. But im new so I guess its a little more exciting to me. plus you have so many cacti.

yeah Im not gonna touch it for a few weeks. I can barley handle it right now. Its just a green dot. I would crush it just picking it up. but once it is big enough for me to pick up, off with its head.

now I have to work on getting some loph seeds. of course williamsii, but i would like a few others too.

A lot of people say you can leave the seedling in the pot sealed in a zip lock back for a year.I have done it this way it worked fine for me.After they germ i put small gravel carefully around them.It helps them not to dampen off.At the first sign of them starting to turn pinkish decrease the light. In the wild most cactus start growing under what are called nursery plants that block most of the light. As seedlings they burn very easily.Hope this helps you.Poboy

Seedlings will start to burn under a flouro. Just move them so they're not directly underneath.

ok. im really suprised how sensitive they are to light seeing that they grow naturally in the desert.

if the seedlings begin to show purple/red colouration then the light is too intense, just move them away a bit...
or even better, start with the light a couple of feet away and gradually move it closer...

in their natural environment lophophora and many other cacti begin to grow under "nursery bushes" which shade them from the intense sun and provide a better environment for germinating seeds...
