New cannabis type prompts call for action [NZ]
    #9472217 - 12/21/08 01:21 PM (4 years, 5 months ago)

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4800002a11.html

A new breed of powerful cannabis and ballooning costs in treating its health effects have led to calls for urgent action, including drug education for primary school children.

The information, in a National Drug Intelligence Bureau report obtained by The Dominion Post under the Official Information Act, shows that cannabis, the most widely used illicit drug, causes more than $30 million a year in hospital bills.

The report the first of its kind to use information from Customs, health and police officials warns that the drug is likely to become more harmful. The threat posed by high-potency "re-engineered" cannabis has been steadily increasing, it says.

Hospital costs jumped 50 per cent from $19.5 million in 2004 to $31 million in 2005. Of the 2062 hospital cases in 2005, 48 admissions cost between $100,000 and $370,000 each.

The report calls for further action to reduce supply and demand as communities have become "comfortable with high prevalence levels".

Included is a call to curb the "alarming" trend of teenagers to use cannabis by making drug education programmes an immediate priority in primary schools.

Cannabis could account for up to 10 per cent of cases of psychosis, the report says, pointing to increasing admission rates for psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia and behavioural disorders.

Bureau co-ordinator Detective Inspector Stuart Mills said the report provided the first big picture of cannabis' harmful effects.

"We talk about methamphetamine, but here we can see the harm it causes with the number of hospital admissions caused solely by cannabis."

Health Minister Tony Ryall said he had not yet read the report, but suspected the cost to the health system would be "significantly higher than that, when you consider its contribution to accidents and family breakdown".

The call for primary school drug education is welcomed by the Wellington youth drug and alcohol counselling service WellTrust. The average age at which the trust's clients begin using cannabis is about 12, executive officer Murray Trenberth says.

The report says users prefer marijuana grown indoors, where "a consistently higher-quality product is achieved". Scientific tests ESR completed this year are believed to confirm increasing amounts of THC, the ingredient responsible for the giving the "high", in cannabis.

Police have refused a request for the THC test results, but the report says levels are believed to have increased between six and 12 per cent since the late 1990s.

I remember being in DARE when i was much younger and some of the stories they would tell you are not only ridiculous, but completely untrue. One story was that a woman was on LSD and thought her infant was a turkey so she baked it in the oven. Now I look back and think thats hilarious, but at the time I guess it scared me.

They say it causes $31 million in hospital bills and their going to brainwash people at even lower ages. Alcohol kills 150,000 a year and cigarettes kill 450,000 a year. When will they stop fucking the world over and just legalize drugs.

legalize drugs?  probably never---  legalize weed, now that might actually happen if we don't expect too much but if you expect the legalization of weed, cocaine, heroin, mescaline, and all the phenylethylamines then good fucking luck.  I don't care how high you get or how great your philosophy is, the conservatives will never vote to legalize a drug like heroin or coke.

"The information, in a National Drug Intelligence Bureau report obtained by The Dominion Post under the Official Information Act, shows that cannabis, the most widely used illicit drug, causes more than $30 million a year in hospital bills."

The only reason cannabis causes $30 million a year in hospital bills is because it's illegal, thus not giving patients the medicine they need, thus sending them to the hospital because they're sick.

Also, more potent cannabis = less hits to get high = less smoke in your lungs

That's a real shame that we're only at 10%.  It just goes to show that these growers could still further improve the quality of their product.

I have seen where Cannabis can cause temporary psychosis, which is quite treatable. I have yet to see a valid study that says that it actually causes permanent psychosis in a person that didn't already have a good chance of developing it.

I would love to see a breakdown in the hospital costs that Cannabis causes.

Just this collection of reports (http://www.skunked.co.uk/articles/medicinal-marijuana.htm) says that 31 million people who suffer from arthritis could have their symptoms alleviated by marijuana, not counting what it can do for AIDS, Cancer, MS, Tumors, Epilepsy, even Asthma! The possible list goes on.

True conservatives are actually your best bet at getting any drug legalized. The conservatives you speak of are not truly conservative.

Maybe the movie Pineapple Express was more than just a simple stoner movie!
PINEAPPLE EXPRESS hits dealers this holiday season, Make sure you don't spend all of your money on presents!

Ohh, and that's just the media talking again. One dumb ass underpaid police officer just crawled his ass out of his mothers uterus and found out how utterly paranoid marijuana makes him feel (after being promised nothing but the giggles and the munchies). He starts telling all of his friends and before you know it, its some super-potent alien strain from the inside of the earth somewhere, wreaking havoc like never before. Its all about who can cover "this" story  so that I can get famous from some stupid article in the news journals. (I want my promotion!)

Our government KNOWS this isn't some different plant than the one that the world was used to and stoning off of some 5,000 years ago. Come on, USA scientists are not THAT dumb. And neither are the people in power, that's their trademark, their job, to get people like you and me riled up on how stupid the media REALLY is. So that maybe one day we start to realize that with all the dumb ass media, no one will EVER get anywhere.
Thats the main job of the media and it always was.
Dont play into their jokes. I don't like watching cops arrest people on that TV show, same as I don't like hearing about all the other idiots who don't know their shit, but make full fledged documentaries.
Its pointless. Just let it go....

If only we could pinpoint the exact cause...I believe it to be solid education. Education starting so early. Education should be done by the parents, starting very early. Starting while the baby's brain is still developing inside the womb. We are not a warmongering race anymore, I wish we would just stop breeding for that. Breed for intelligence.
Humans will not have a chance otherwise.

Psychosis is an antiquated term with no medical or psychiatric validity. It just means a "loss of contact with reality" and has been defined in many different ways in many different contexts.

This article ignorantly echoes the tradition of referring to psychedelics as psychomimetics that induce temporary psychoses--a position that has since been thrown out the window by both scientists and clinicians.

Marijuana does not cause a total loss of contact with reality. You may be sedated, have blurred vision, difficulty focusing, fleeting thoughts, etc., but no psychiatrist would call you "insane" or "psychotic." Besides, psychosis is not a diagnosis but a symptom of a large collection of symptoms called a syndrome or disorder.

It should be noted that psychiatric conditions in general are not like medical conditions, which are localized, easy-to-study, and well-documented in literature. In psychology, one talks about correlations only. Anytime anyone tells you that a drug causes depression or schizophrenia or "psychosis," you should be immediately wary of the claim.

Note that there is no definition for a 'breed' or a 'type' or a 'kind'. This 'genetic engineering' has been going on for along time with corn, apples, dogs, etc. It is properly called 'selective breeding'. Nothing new here.

$370,000 for treatment? On WHAT?!

Here, I will 'treat' them for free. If you have a bad reaction to smoking - don't smoke. Stopping is enough, no other drugs are needed. You will start to get 'well' immediately. Is this too fucking simple?

It's bad enough that these marijuana dealing hoodlums are re-engineering their marijuana, but re-engineering our cats and dogs too! This is despicable and I hope quite frankly that the government doesn't rest until every last one of these marijuana smoking hoodlums is in jail! Well there's actually probibly too many of them to throw them in jail. Maybe the government ought to start some sort of penal colony on an island somewhere or something where they can house these delinquents.

its not even worth my time to google and cite sources that show the billions of medical dollars that alcohol and tobacco cost the taxpayer each year, not to mention lost wages and work time. also the enormous amount of deaths that alcohol and tobacco cause that marijuana does not. also the violent crimes that alcohol leads to that marijuana does not.

lol at that article. no research = good propaganda.

Let's see here, I have gone psychotic from not using cannabis; I have been jailed and involuntarily sent when not using cannabis (I mean medicated stoned, not just smoke a hit and freak out that I can't find that nice comfortable rip that puts me in my seat).

Ya brain wash kids, the same shit their parents do (usually) then have them go wild when they pop that cherry....I think religions used to do this with sex and well, people went into sexual histaria as well.

Really though, people freak about weed because it is taboo; they don't usually smoke pot and aren't really used to it and it's so different from the morals that have been placed around them that they have a bad moral reaction (not really chemical, just induced by sudden extreme change in thinking).

DARE isn't going to work, never really has; the studies are a bunch of let's play with this some more never gonna happen ideal thinking...not actual reality.

Hell, drugs couldn't be more risky today than ever; laws are extreme, jobs are strict, in fact it's a huge risk and if humanity was that opposed there would be no use!

--------------------
Drug chemicals are going to be more abundant and survive longer than any anti-drug agendas.  Some of us are just ahead of the game, we already know what the future will understand.  Drugs weren't bad but how some people used them were and some people just were bad because they had to be.
