Solo mushroom trip - 2.5 years preparation
    #9425610 - 12/13/08 07:22 PM (4 years, 5 months ago)

Species: Copelandia Cyanescan (Hawaiian)
Dose: 1 gram (dry)
Date / Time: Friday, 12th December 2008, 16:15 (just before sunset)
Setting: Solo, Apartment, 6 hour playlist, 2.5 years preparation
Set: Positive, Optimistic, Excited, Confident

Introduction:
The day of the trip had finally arrived.  Mushrooms had been banned two weeks ago, but I had stockpiled several dry grams of the powerful Copelandia Cyanescans prior to the ban.  My company had given me a day off work - an ideal opportunity to enter the spirit world.  All loose ends had been tied; my apartment was clean and I had no worries.

I sat at the computer watching The Simpsons whilst preparing my dose.  I pealed and cut two apples and placed them in a bowl in the kitchen for the trip.

+0:00
The dried mushrooms were surprisingly more bearable to eat than the fresh.  Despite such long preparation, my heart raced with nerves at the experience that awaited me.  The music helped to boost my confidence in the experience, though coldness swept through my body.  Was the heating on?  Yes, but, I still couldn't help feeling cold.  I put on a sweater.

+0:10
What could I do whilst waiting?  Would my dried mushrooms really work?  I became restless.  I needed to do something whilst waiting.  Anything.  Anything that would enable me to be occupied and move around a bit.  I disconnected my external hard disks to reduce background noise, shut down my communications (Skype, Pidgin, phone), cleared the desktop on my computer, closed the curtains and cleared some things from the kitchen, amongst other things.

+0:25
Short term memory became noticeably poor.  I needed to do something, but immediately forgot what, despite best efforts.  Ah, that was it.  I needed to fetch the clock and sheets from my bedroom.  Hm...  Wait, what was I doing?  Oh yeah, must remember to fetch the sheets and clock from my bedroom.  Sometime later, I managed to move the couch into the middle of the room, positioned so that I could lie down directly facing the speakers.  The physical effort took a toll on my body.  Daylight outside was beginning to dissipate, and I no longer dared exit my room, for fear that I might encounter one of the other occupants of my house.

+0:35
The gentle music soothed my mind as I sank deeper into trance, surrounded by quilts and pillows on the leather couch in complete darkness.  Finally, I could relax.  The trip was about to begin.

+0:45
The music becomes a little too active.  I looked forward to the gentler peak of the playlist, as a slight anxiety develops as the reality of the situation begins to take hold.  I force myself to remember the wise words of Terence McKenna, and resist any urge to try to change anything.  I lie completely still.

+1:00
A knock at my door!  Shit.  I better ignore it.  I'm in absolutely no state to converse with anyone right now, and I certainly don't want anyone seeing me lying in darkness in a pile of quilts on my settee in the middle of the room.  No.  That would be bad.  I keep quiet and wait until the current track has finished before I'm sure that the person has left, then I can relax again.

+1:15
I begin to become accustomed to the experience.  It seems odd, but somehow, I learned how to accept the inevitability of my state.  I forgo my own will to resist and begin to accept and flow with the experience and the music, riding deeper into a mellow, relaxed trance.  The music sounds distant, yet very clear, as I wallow within my relaxed state of psychedelic contemplation.  Is this natural?  Is this really happening?  Can such a small plant really do all of this?

+1:35
A sense of accomplishment; the time spent preparing the playlist was definitely worthwhile.  The music complemented the trance perfectly; non-intrusive, very hypnotic.  My entire body felt heavy under the heavy pull of gravity, sinking me into the couch.  Was I dying?  It didn't matter, because I was at peace.  Nothing mattered anymore.

+1:45
I flow through a fantastic experience of new-age, alien and ambient soundtracks.  As I reach the peak, the quiet whoosh of simple wind surrounding me gave a total sense of euphoria and disconnection from the outside world, accompanied by an ambient distant drone.  I am somewhere else.

+2:15
A little anxiety develops.  Why did I include the Doom soundtrack?  This wasn't meant to be relaxing...  too tense.  Still, it shouldn't last long.  I must get up and go to the toilet.  Need to make sure I don't run into anyone outside my room.  I carefully crept around the landing to the toilet.  It occurred to me how badly I needed to go, having not realised this during the trance.

+2:25
"Third-eye" images of biological forms begin to develop: human, animal and alien.  The images morph between various forms.  My visual field is inactive; these "images" occur somewhere outside the bounds of visual perception, in my imagination.  The images of beings are sublime, beautiful, huge and powerful.  They take on no particular personality; they are unconditionally gentle and sensual towards me.  I gain an overwhelming appreciation of biological forms and their sublime beauty.

I begin to engage with my subconscious; an unheard voice in mind, trustful and wise; a kind of Goddess.  She gives encouragement; complementing me on having made large improvements in myself and my life over the last years, but urges me that to continue to improve myself and my physical well-being.

+2:35
Basking in the musical soundscape.  The sound of gentle fountains and crystal glass surrounds me, creating an environment of sublime beauty.

+2:50
Another deep trance state.  Sinking once again into the couch.  How will I remember everything that I've learned?  Should I record this?  No.  That will break the hypnotic spell.  I allow the trance to overwhelm me.

+3:10
More Doom soundtrack; not nearly as tense now.  The images of biological forms return, influenced by the soundtrack into a much more alien form than before.  They float around me in three dimensions.  I cannot see them, yet they seem to be there.  Somehow creepy, yet gentle.

+3:20
Shpongle awakens me from the trance.  An overwhelmingly strange and chaotic soundscape in contrast the prior ambient background sound.  I get up once again to go to the toilet, carefully checking the landing.  Ah, yes!  The apple in the kitchen!  I go to the kitchen and take a few pieces of apple.  I did not feel like eating; much more animalistic; I took in the smell and the taste of the fruit, as I very slowly ate it, relaxed and unrushed.  What time is it?  19:35!?  Not even half way through the trip?  What the hell?

+3:40
A strange sense of beginning to "come back".  I lay the opposite way on the couch, with the sound coming from behind (and seemingly above) me.  The sound seemed to penetrate the top of my head, giving me strength through relaxation.  The ambient, relaxing sound of rainfall and thunder contrasted blissfully with the warmth of the quilts and pillows.  Fantasy began to take over my mind as I contemplated strange scenarios that made little sense in reality.

+4:15
I stand up, as still as a statue.  I feel overwhelmed with energy, yet relaxed, stretching my arms, legs and neck and running my fingers through my hair.  I am at peace.  The trip is successful.  I stand strong and proud having also learned many lessons.  The trance state has become a standing meditative state of contemplation.

I begin to look around in the darkness; the LED's of the modem, router, Wii, computer, keyboard, etc.  I cannot focus, and this creates a strange effect.  With my glasses, the LED's appear with a clear, crisp and futuristic look.

+4:30
I sit in the middle of the couch.  I contemplate various things about myself, as my thoughts gradually deteriorate to a more personal level; for example, I contemplate my use of Linux and free software as a personal philosophy, beyond just a simple choice of products, and the absurd notion of using large lumps of metal and plastic (computers) as a social outlet for communicating with friends and family.

+4:45
Relaxed...  Returning to reality through a content and tranquil, happy soundscape.  I feel an actual sensation of travelling back to reality, sitting on the my vehicle (the couch), rushing through the wonderful soundscape that surrounds me.

+5:10
I am arriving back to reality.  I switch on the lights and boot-up the projector and the Wii.  My mum, brother and a friend are already racing on-line on Mario Kart Wii!  Seems like an ideal time to test "mushroom-enhanced" racing.  I connect to the race.  My reactions, judgment and overall ability seem suberp, allowing me to win several races!  The experience was incredibly engaging and immersive; particularly playing against friends and family (they did not know I was tripping).  Everything from the vast distant autumn countryside in Maple Treeway to the small architectural details of Mario Circuit stood out beautifully, yet were not distracting to my concentration on the race.  The joyous music from my playlist further enhanced the competitive atmosphere of the game.

+6:00
Playlist finished.  Trip is over.  I fire up Skype and call my family and friends with whom I'm racing.  I make an excuse about network problems to explain why I didn't call earlier.

Conclusion:
Overall, both a fun and valuable trip!  Well worth the extensive planning and effort that I put into preparing for it.  I doubt I will be tripping solo again for some time.  2.5 years though?  Maybe not that long, but we'll see.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. I find, that you can get a lot more out of your psychedelic experience by turning the lights off, getting comfy, & turning on some ambient music. It tends to take me further than doing something active. I like to take deep breaths, & focus on meditating.. the body high feels amazing, & the things I learn inside of my mind are always so rewarding.
It's sad that mushrooms will be banned, are you a native Dutch? I hope the Dutch will realize the banning of mushrooms is just one step further towards a less liberal, & more conservative state: something I've found the Dutch people to despise.

Indeed!  The challenge for me is always to find new suitable material for the experience; I don't really like to re-use the same music for more than one trip, so this becomes increasingly difficult each time.  I'm actually contemplating a silent-darkness experience for my next trip (i.e. Terrence McKenna style).

I'm British (living in Holland for 3.5 years), and yes it's sad that mushrooms are banned.  The views from people I know seem mixed.  Surprisingly, it seems to be older generations who are more opposed to the ban; whilst younger people seem to be more in support of it (because it "protects the children" from "using crap" - yeah, even Dutch people can talk out of their ass).

But it's not all bad news.  I went to Amsterdam yesterday and they're still selling truffles (they are not covered by the ban).  Grow-kits for all species also remain legal and available.  Each shop seems to have handled the ban differently though.  I saw one shop with a sign up saying "No Mushrooms?  No Problem!  L.S.A (Hawaiian Baby Woodrose Seeds) mushroom substitute"...  I don't really know what to say about that; I tried HBWR seeds once and they did absolutely nothing at all. :p

Hi, I was wondering how you prepared for your trip? Did you spend a lot of time thinking about your intent? Were there things that you planned for that were particularly helpful? Were there things that you could have done better? I'm curious because it's been over two years since I last tripped, and I've thinking of taking a large dose and doing everything I can to make the right set and setting.

Love the trip report man but maybe you can give us more details on the reason for the length of the trip and the choice of dosage?

Nice report, I have started digging through that playlist and there are some tracks I will grab.

I actually prefer the lower doses myself, especially for staying inside. It is somewhat refreshing to see someone that takes it seriously, I wish I would have when I first started, there are times it would have benefited me to be a lot more prepared. One time in particular I took way too much tea and wandered a house for hours anxious and confused

yes that is true, all that about how people should take it seriously...but really now...1 gram? is that even enough to feel threshold effects? you werent capable of answering the door and talking to someone after eating 1 gram and preparing for 2 and a half years? im sorry but that just isnt a true mushie experience in my book. not to say thats bad or wrong or anything...just in my eyes its a shame you didnt dig deeper than a gram

Guys, this wasn't a low dose.  The mushrooms were Copelandia Cyanescans.  1gr is equivalent to ~4gr of good Cubensis.

And the 2.5 year preparation was because I like listening to music that I haven't listened to on previous trips.  This restriction makes creating a suitable playlist into a very long and patient process, having tripped several times before in a similar fasion.
