 smashed finger, blood blister under nail?

Hi, i smashed my finger nail, my middle finger on my right hand to be exact. I am right handed and an electrican so it makes it EXTREMELY difficult to work.
Last night i smashed it.. It hurt so bad, like i cant even explain it, something so small hurt so much. So i put ice on it, took some pain killers, and some sleep aid and went to bed. Woke up at 3:30am and took some more pain killers.
This morning, it was killing me, at work i couldn't handle it. A few guys said to drill a hole in it, which i thought was crazy but.. I guess since there is pressure under the nail causing most of the pain if i relieve this pressure it would be less painfull.
So i did some reading during my 9am break, and found out that doctors will pierce a hold with a hot pin type tool, and others reported that they have heated and used a pin, a paperclip or even a drill bit..
So i drilled it with a small bit, i think i may have gone in a bit too deep when it went though and hit the nail bed.. not hard though. But the blood squirted out and i felt better. It is still a bit sore and throbbs a bit.. much less. And it still swollen around the area.
So? Should i be OK? Or should i go see a doctor, i think it will get better, typing this and me using the finger is really helping! I will see how i feel in a few days.
Everyone said i was crazy, but i couldn't believe how much this hurt.. Now i just have to wait for it to fall off..

keep it clean, use antibiotic ointments, and wrap it up for a few days, allowing it some time to breathe every now and then. if it gets infected that is not good and you must go to a doctor.

Well, that was painful to read. I smashed my finger once on the nail and I couldn't even use a broom at work, so I know how you must feel. My nail eventually just fell off completely.
I agree with the advice above.

well it seems to be swollen now, alot. Im hoping i didn't damage anything inside, it is still really painfull. I will visit the doc tommorow, even if they say there is nothing they can do, peace of mind is always nice. I feel useless.

Yeah, smashed nails suck. But opening the nail and letting the pressure out was the right thing to do. You'd have been better off with a red-hot pin though. Its a little more sterile. But you'll be OK if it doesn't get infected.
I jammed a finger really hard a while back and lost a nail over it, but its almost back to normal now. The worst part is in between when the nail is coming off and shortly after. There are lots of sensitive bits that seem to catch and bump on everything you touch!

ive smashed my nail with a hammer before, it was bad, and the pressure was so great i thought it was going to explode. heated a sewing needle to red hot and melted a hole in the nail, blood squirted out about 2 feet. i was fine after that.

yeah... about that.. you're going to loose your nail temporarily.. after the initial bruising and swelling goes down and it heals up your nail will grow back in 6-8 mo. be careful with it because when its healed and the nail is growing back its quite painful to have smashed or even brushed up against feels weird because its where your nail should be.. as for the blood blister part.. you should lance it.. and let it heal naturally.. keep it CLEAN but dont cover it unless you work with something that could get in it

i had a drawing table fall from the bed of a pickup onto my bare toes... a week or so later i had no nails on my right foot.. it felt so awkward to put socks on because they would rub against the tender tops of my toes.. looked goofy as hell too..

i smashed my thumb nail in a door last saturday, after a week the pressure is killing me but im too chicken poop to put a hot needle through it. its at the nail bed so that is why im so afraid, any advice on what happens if i just let it alone to fall off?
