I was wondering if there was any mushroom that looks like hericium.I found this today thought it looked close.

Yes.But i only grabbed about a quarter of the mushroom. There is more back in the woods.

That it is, but it's way too old. Go back to the same spot a day or 2 after a good rain and see if anymore are in bloom. You're looking for mushrooms with a much brighter cream color.

It was on a dead log.I put it on the top of a big pile of cut up logs.Hope it spreads.
I wasn't going to eat it.It sat in my truck all day so it dryed some.Now I know where to look.Its the same spot where i find honeys.
I have to try some when i find a fresher specimen.

I may be mistaken, but I don't think that's a Hericium. Especially not Hericium erinaceus (the "lions mane").
Your mushroom almost seems to have a cap. Hericium "lack a distinct cap".
Don't have much experience with Hericium. Wait for someone with more ID skills.

This looks like a shelf fungus with tentacles.Not like the pictures i have seen of hericium.

It's in the same family as Lion's Mane (Hericiaceae). The species is Creolophus cirrhatus.

It is hericium. It also goes by the name Hericium cirrhatum.

Herricium cirrhatus , Hydnum cirrhatus, Creolophus cirrhatus, Steccherrinum cirrhatus are other synonyms

Hehehe.
By the way, it's supposedly a fine edible, but extremely rare. If you decide to harvest some for food, do leave behind some others to spread spores. Always try to cut away the mushroom from the substrate as well.

Nice find! I found one over the summer in Pennsylvania, and had no clue what it was. If there are more I may try one as this one was huge. They are one odd looking mushy

Hericium cirrhatum usually has been referred to a separate genus Creolophus P. Karst. One reason is that basidiospores have been interpreted as smooth. However, when observed in SEM the spore surface appears slightly rugose (Keller 1997Citation). We cannot judge whether this is an artifact caused by the preparation method or a true ornamentation. Since Hericium cirrhatum in our tree occurs nested among Hericium species that all have ornamented spores, we find it most logical to regard Creolophus as a superfluous genus.

I found some on an old firewood pile in Virginia 2 years ago. Around this time of the year. They smelled fantastic, but were too old to even consider eating or isolating.

are you sure this is Hericium cirrhatum, and not a toothed polypore of some kind, like Spongipellis pachyodon. The teeth to me look flattened like the elongated tubes of some polypores, not like the true teeth of Hericiums. I could be wrong, here is a toothed polypore i found.
