so, this is the deal.
im planning on taking the motorcycle divers license and get myself a little 125cubic cycle. then i plan on driving it around for a solid month close to home to learn the ropes and then driving cross europe for a month.
starting from austria going to portugal and back.
i want to pack 1000 euros, a small tent and supplies, a special insurance with "transfer my vehicle back home if it breaks" a credit card and see what happens.
now i ask you guys, what is all there i should consider and think of, i never have done something like this and i am way looking forward to it !

Make sure you can use that tent in the places you go. Scandinavia has this thing called "allemansrätt", which means you can camp anywhere as long as it's not smack in someones yard. I don't know if the rest of Europe has something like this or not, but you should probably check it out.

I would say you should be very familiar with the mechanics of the bike.
You'll probably want something bigger than 125cc if your going to be carrying much at all.
I think you could probably find some motorcycle touring advice on (+general europe advice) at bootsnall.com
Im not sure how it is in Europe, but here in Canada we have "graduated liscensing" (i just got my motorcycle liscense) + i have to pass 1 parking lot test to take off speed/nighttime/passenger restrictions after 1 month + after 1 year i need to take a road test before i get my full liscense. Until i have my full liscense i will not be allowed to ride out of Canada.
Might want to check the details of that, where your at.
Keep us posted - oneday i want to motorcycle tour too.

You will most certainly need a bigger bike.
650cc or bigger would be best. Especially if your a new rider. That extra power and torque will get you out of a TON of trouble, and generally make a lot of things easier. It sounds back-ass-ward, but Small CC bikes take a lot more skill and experience when traveling, and racing.
The type of bike is very important. Are you riding highways, needing to blast at 80pmh all day long? Are you taking narrow shitty dirt roads?
little bit of both?
Pocket GPS is the most important thing, aside from your tool kit and spare gaskets,nuts/bolts/Loctite ( they Shake loose lot), bundle of Duct tape, bailing wire, and Zip ties, and something to carry extra fuel in. (those Camp fuel bottles are perfect) That said I've used anything from mason jars to 2l coke Bottles. That might not be as much a big deal, but on the old choppers with small gas tanks we ride, it's a must.
I would personally wait a while till your really familiar with the bike you plan on riding. From a riding/skills standpoint, and more importantly a mechanical standpoint.
make sure you can simple stuff like changing Gaskets, tires, chains, simple electronic hack jobs( ie: be familiar with your Wiring Diagram), other misc. stuff like that.
Pack layers of cloths. When the weather changes your gonna wanna be ready, it's the difference from an enjoyable trip to a living hell, of needle sharp rain, and freezing cold, or sanded skin, heat stroke ,and death.
There's so much more to it,and Since it's your first trip you really need to know what your getting into. That said, traveling on a bike seriously the closest thing to Nirvana I've ever felt. Your really In your environment. Not to mention the beg, borrow, steal of fixing your bike. ( it will happen) Sleeping next to your bike on the side of the road.
it's glorious.
I've been planning a real big ride for a few years now. I'm finally getting my Frame and Front end, but I still Gotta Build my bike first. Pretty much selling off everything and just Riding around till I go bankrupt.
Good luck,if you got any questions i'll answer the best i can.

* oh and dont forget a few spare headlight/taillight bulbs. There's nothing Worse than trying to ride 80mph at 4am,with a headlamp ducttaped to your broken headlight.

Germany has the same thing.
Listen to CaptainH13, if anybody here knows his shit about touring on bikes it's that guy

thank you for your hints CaptainH13
well, the bike i am planning to get will stay a 125 because i plan on doing a chill and laid back trip, not planning on driving fast or anything.
as i said ill make sure im driving the bike for one full month already before i attempt anything big and i make sure i have an insurance which will cover the transporting back of my bike in case it breaks down or something.

this definitely is something i will have to look into !
i was thinking about using the sofasurfer website on the web to help me with finding some places to sleep during my travel and i also plan on taking some hiking boots with me as i am a big hiker and mountainman myself.
man, i wish it was summer already and i could get the bike now

Don't forget a good folding tool kit. A big problem with a 125 is going to be finding places to tie all your gear to. I rode from the Texas/Mexico border to Alaska a few years ago, and even with a Harley Davidson, I had a hard time carrying all the food/tools/clothes/camping-cooking gear. If you'll be in the mountains, don't forget warm clothes. Rain gear is a must.
If you stop for hikes, you'll have to worry about getting your stuff stolen. If you're hiking in national parks, you might be able to leave your bike at the ranger station where it will be more secure.
Smaller bikes shake a lot more, so keep up with tightening the bolts on your trip or you'll start having things like mirrors, lights, muffler, etc., falling off.
If it's a 2 stroke engine, carry lots of spare oil, because 2 stroke oil can be hard to find on the road. The same thing goes for chain oil.
It will be a trip you'll remember the rest of your life, that's for sure. RR

i was thinking of having a 90 liter backpack for all my stuff, or most of it.
i think it would be all right to have it strapped to my back while riding, what are the opinions of you guys ? it would certainly be from my bottom up to my head in height, resting on the seat of the bike.
i dont see any problems ?

I think this is a bad idea, you will experience neck and shoulder pain pretty quick i bet.
Its better to have weight distributed lower on your bike aswell to lower your center of gravity...

Sissy bars, all the way.
you can pack them up like crazy. it typically stays in the air pocket of your body, and If you pack enough you can rest back on it while riding, which is fantastic for long rides. It's like a bumpy recliner ( i ride hardtails).

bar bags are a good option too, but take not, if you put too much up there it'll obviously make your steering heavy.
old faithful saddlebags obviously,as well.
as PDU said, carrying all your load on your back is a bad idea, if your Doing long rides.

well i am planning on riding 3+ hours a day so i see what you guys are getting at.
those sissy bars arent particular to my liking from looks but i can DEFINITELY see the advantage to them.
i take they can be fitted on pretty much any bike if there arent any to begin with ? like it is the case in my situation ?
btw here's a pic of the ride i wanna get, not in this color but black but anyways !

I think you mean the foam stuff that you spray into punctured tires? Dunno how good that would be on a bike, you'd have to ask someone with more experience, but probably not a bad idea for an emergency. I know they work good for cars, but they are for emergencies and you can only drive on them for about 50 miles or so if I remember.

thats about my biggest fear, even though the tires on the vanvan are really tough as you can see and its ok to take them offroad, a busted tire would raise hell !
