Help, very strange growth w/pics.

Hi guys,
This is my first post although I have been lurking here for a good year.
So this is my second ever grow and I am very confused as to what is going on. Basically I found an old sealed spore syringe recently and decided to try and knock up a batch before Christmas. Everything started as expected, the spores colonized my jars/cups fine and starting pinning after about 3 weeks. I then birthed the cakes expecting to get my first flush within a week but nothing seems to be happening this time... it has been about 2 weeks now and all I am getting is this very strange stunted growth (see pictures).

I am not a complete stranger to growing but I am quite novice. The last time I used exactly the same methods other than I always left my fuiting box on top of my fishtank for the extra heat. This time unfortunately the temprature tends to fluctuate more due to the cold weather we have at the moment. I tried putting a power supply or two underneth and that just about keeps it at 21 - 22 degrees. Could this be a problem with the temperature?
Last night I also did an overnight dunk to see if that improves matters.
Anyone have any other suggestions or seen this sort of growth before?
Cheers J

That black stuff on your cake looks a bit suspicious...

strange, i have saw growth like this before. how many times a day are you fanning?

I've never seen this kind of growth, but could you give us the specifics of what you're doing?
Temps, humidity, lighting, how many times you're fanning, what kind of substrate you're using if other than brf?

the pins couldve been damaged when you birthed the cake. the black areas might be the aborted pins. but could also be the presence of a contam. keep an eye on it. youll definately know in a few more days whether its a contam or bruised - aborted pins.
oh yeah also, those pins that appear to be aborts could be rotting. since it has been 2 weeks. thats why they might be blackening. i would suggest cleaning up the cake - do your dunk and roll - then back into the fruiting chamber. but you should be fine but just plucking the aborted pins off the cake itself.

I'm no pftek expert, but you shouldn't have that cake sitting directly on the perlite. Put a small piece of foil under the cake.

i have never experienced something getting a little contaminated but not to the point it took over... hm.
like i previously posted - there appears to be some pins that have aborted and the green-blue looks like bruising from when you birthed your cake.
dont sweat it. let it sit for a few more days and see what happens.

Ok, I just picked all the black stumpy bits off and the are all aborts, but big funny shaped flat aborts. I have taken some pictures to show you minus the perlite.

They smell very mushroomy and are well on the way to going black and inky. Hmmm anyone hungry?
Hmmm, not sure why I got an flush of aborts then nothing.
To sum up my methods I used PF style Vermicide & Brown rice flour cakes. Incubated at around 25 - 28 degrees in the dark. Then things go downhill as this is a bit of a stealth project at the moment (conservative housemates) so they have been in a room with what little natural sunlight we have at the moment sitting on top of two power adapters (only things I could find that give out enough heat). Sadly however the temps drop down to about 15 - 18 degrees during the day and hit around 25 degrees in the eve and at night.
I guess this must be messing them up to start with, it being hotter at night than when the sun is out. Hardly natural.
As of yesterday I have now moved the batch into a wardrobe with a flurencent light to keep them company. Temps are fair more stable now at around 24 - 26 degrees in the day and perhaps 21 - 22 at night.
Any other thoughts?

could just be a degenerated strain however, i doubt it. where did your spores come from?
ps i would not eat them if they are black and inky. they are probably rotten

I think he means they are bruising heavily. They look mutated, but I bet they are fine to eat and potent as fuck.

No, don't eat them, that's illegal! Flush them in the toilet like a good law-abiding citizen.

Spores are from the redeyedfrog I think but they have been up in my attic for a good year!
Has anyone used spores this old before? I wonder if they have gone a bit strange after all this time. Seems a bit bizarre though.

I do not know or even heard of this guy in essence this could be the prob however, i do not know. Yes, I am rambling (good cush). I have used spores that were 5+ years old with no problems at all

Spores last ages on prints. Even 10 year old spores can still be viable. RR once revived some 20 year old spores, although that required some tricks.

this kind of happened to me on my first flush on a few of the cakes. i had several 'puff balls' of mushrooms, they were quite potent. After that flush, i got very nice flushes of actual mushrooms.
