Why would a psychiatrist make an appointment for me to have an MRI?

I've been told i have schizophrenia, then they realised it was Bipolar and the hallucinations were part of that but i don't like assigning labels myself. I'm not on meds since the last months and i'm doin fine.
It's a new guy that i didn't like. Why would a psychiatrist make an appointment for me to have an MRI?

perhaps he is looking for some kind of brain anomaly that might be related to the kinds of symptoms you are experiencing or have experienced in the past. I would be stoked personally to even be able to Get an MRI. Thank your lucky stars imo.

I'm pretty sure true hallucinations light up areas of the brain that are involved in senses. If you hallucinate red lights flying around everywhere, the area of your brain involved in seeing will light up as if you are really seeing these and it's getting true sensory input. If however, you are making this all up and are just THINKING you are seeing these things, a different area of your brain will light up.

but what if I'm not having any hallucinations during the MRI, i don't even hallucinate that much anymore now, my main problem is mood swings.
The psych never listened to that though, he focused on symptoms i don't even have, after i told him multiple times that what he was focusing on, was of no concern to me because i can deal with hallucinations.
I don't know about it, i might not even go, i don't trust them that much anymore, the only cool psychiatrist i seen left.
I wouldn't be surprised if this guy is getting me an MRI so he can gather data for research he's doing or something - he seemed really shady - a real pill pusher.

Psychiatrists will go to great lengths to prove that you're crazy.

I read that tumors and cists can be responsible for causing psychological problems. It sounds as if the likely place you may be experiencing one would be wherever serotonin is produced in your brain. If he's getting an MRI done it's not likely for tracking brain activity. There is another scan for that and it works by tracing where oxygen is distributed in your brain (I can't remember what it's called). I bet if your getting scans done you are in the avenues outside of pill pushing. Pills are for chemical problems, scans are for finding physical problems and those often require surgery.

Good luck on your scan. I agree that he probably wants to check for a tumor or other physical abnormality. You should ask him to make a copy of the scan on a CD for you when you're finished. They can be fun to look at on the PC if you're ever bored.
