i repot when they are totally pot bound... if i suspect a plant is ready for a repot i'll lift it out of its pot and check the roots, time isn't really the way to judge it... i tend to keep my pot sizes to a minimum so they dry out fast, so repotting is more frequent... using bigger pots would mean less repotting but more risk over the soil being too wet too often if growing outdoors.

Yeah,I agree uarewotueat. If you put a really small cactus in a huge pot,the pots take a lot longer to dry out.The soil in all my cacti's pots is totally saturated, and I'm surprised I haven't lost any to rot. It's been raining here for days, and I just have to many cacti to move in the house.I've found that Cacti aren't like most plants, and if they are a smaller variety, they can remain in the same pot for years.

depends one the cactus (and climate). many columnars will benefit form huge spreading roots, so bigger is better. smaller/slower species i do as uare says...once it looks totally root bound, i repot the next year.
cause most people here keep trichs or lophs i use thee as a very general guide. when lophs stem reaches the edges of the pot, i repot (touching). when trichs have roots coming out the bottom in good numbers and size, i repot.

yeah,it does depend on the species, but I've had a few smaller cacti in the same pots for years, and they aren't showing any sign of being rootbound. The Bigger columnar cacti should probably be transplanted every year or so,and in the past 3 years I've transplanted my seed grow Tershecki's 3 times.

i often repot my astros every 2-4 years..other species even longer. some are so slow growing i repot just to re freshen their substrate with some feces. columnars usually get repotted here for no better reason other than i want their pot for something else....so i stick em in the ground lol.
but really, there are no good rules cause every specie is different. every specie in *your* mix is different. and every specie in your mix in your climate is different. so its best to read a few webpages and then kill some plants, swear and threaten the folks that wrote those web pages, and live on thinking "i'll never listen to that crazy fuck again!"

i think a general point to make would be that cacti don't tend to suffer so badly if they are not repotted as soon as they should be... if they go a year or two in a pot that is too small it's not going to do them any serious harm... so long as water and nutrients are available they will still grow but at a slower rate and just wait it out until they are given more root space, such troopers
