Damn zoloft..

So i have been on zoloft for a week now and im only at about 25mg and goin up to 50mg soon, and last night i finally got ahold of some mushrooms, but ground up and mixed in chocolate. i knew the zoloft would kill the trip but i let my excitement get the best of me and i ate the chocolate mixture anyway. i only got that stoned feeling and never tripped, im pretty upset. i think ill try it again but im gonna stop the zoloft for a week or two before i try again.
any one else have a situation like this or an experience?

On an SSRI, you're going to have to double your dose or more to trip properly.

You never know...the shrooms could have been weak or there wasn't as much in the chocolate as you were told...I myself stay away from the chocolate mushrooms because I don't find them to be legit around here.

Ween off the SSRI. If you just stop you could crash, and that is unpleasent to say the least. That is just my prozac experiance though. Well, it's just a week, don't go on too long and plan to stop fast. Bummer with the lack of trip though.

Oh alright then.
Also, I've read on erowid about a study where SSRI's didn't have an effect on mushrooms?
found this -
Quote:
Prozac is an SSRI. In general SSRIs tend to reduce the effects of psychedelics a bit. However, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) researcher Kit Bonson, reports in The Interactions between Hallucinogens and Antidepressants that some people report that there is NO decrease in effects when psilocybin mushrooms are taken by people taking prozac daily.

thanks for all the quick responses. im probably gonna see if i can find some mushies that arent mixed in the chocolate.. but my friend said he could guarantee a trip off these but, mistakes happen. i was just reading about people on zoloft and doing mushrooms and theyre saying the zoloft takes off about 1/3rd of the effect when at 75-100mg daily. so i would imagine the shrooms were just not very potent plus my 25mg daily doesnt help much. ill probably get some more soon and hope for the best.

Prozac and zoloft are 2 seperate chemicals. i dont really know if each one has a different way of reacting with psilocybin, but that study only accounts for prozac. maybe zoloft effects it more? im not too sure.. im trying to find out this information myself but i cant find many answers atm.

yea its no problem. i just want to find some answers about this topic.
and as for the guy under this post, you are very lucky you can still trip. maybe zoloft doesnt really kill the trip, and my shrooms were just bunk. but im hoping for the best next time

apparently different SSRIs have different affinities for the various receptors, so their effects on psilocybin and psilocin could very well differ. personally I don't understand how a serotonin agonist like psilocybin would be affected by a serotonin reuptake inhibitor other than a greater amount of actual serotonin taking up space in the receptors at a given time...

well, the SSRI reduces the amount of serotonin being reused by your brain correct? and when there isnt much serotonin being reused, the psilocin has nothing to react with? i dont know, but maybe it was just a result of weak shrooms

SSRIs bind to the same receptor sites as psychedelics, that's why they decrease their effects.

Any kind of SSRI will significantly reduce the magnitude of any psychedelic experience. This makes perfect sense when you consider that psychedelics are utilized for the expansion of one's consciousness, while SSRIs are intended to reduce it.
Be careful with Zoloft. If by chance your psychiatrist has given you an incorrect diagnosis, the results could be disastrous, especially if you're bi-polar. Attempting to treat bi-polar disorder with Zoloft is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. I was prescribed Zoloft a few months ago and immediately I could tell that something wasn't right. My thought process was disorganized and I just felt strange in general. My psychiatrist assured me that this was merely the result of my body "adjusting to the medication." Not long after this, I had a full-blown psychotic episode which lasted for days. Needless to say, I discontinued the medication.
Also, I would advise against abruptly discontinuing the medication, as I have read that this can also produce a psychotic reaction. You could gradually taper off instead, but that's up to you.
The fact that these drugs are still being produced and prescribed indiscriminately, despite the ridiculous amount of evidence of their harmful effects, as well as the absence of any hard evidence of their efficacy truly leads me to believe that there really is no hope.

From my reading, psilocybin and psilocin are 5-HT2A (and to a lesser degree 5-HT1A) agonists or partial agonists post synaptically, while SSRIs are thought to act pre-synaptically on serotonin receptors* to increase serotonin levels within the synapse. Hence, it seems that psilocybin and psilocin are likely to compete with serotonin proper and not the SSRI molecules.
*I'm trying to find literature stating exactly which receptors...
