ok, pretty much just started with agar. I noticed that with the mycelium I have used on agar. That there will be a small spot of contam (smaller than a dime) then the mycelium will overtake it. I dont plan to use to contam area just curious if this is normal. The cultures I have used are Pleurotus djamor, Pleurotus ostreatus, and enoki. Any info is appreciated!! Thanks

It does happen just depends on what the contam is. Normally though if it is Trichoderma then the Trichoderma will be strongest. Oysters are fast growing and can overwhelm a number of contaminants. Not too sure about enoki though.

A lot of fungi have anti-bacterial compounds secreted by the mycelium. Most well-known are Ganoderma, Pleurotus, Lentinula, but others do as well. It is common to see mycelium overtake contaminated area on the agar. Most of the time the contaminant is not completely gone, unfortunately. However, it is usually safe and is a normal procedure to take mycelium from the uncontaminated area and re-plate it. Usually contaminated dishes are not used directly to inoculate other substrate because of high probability of carrying contaminant with the mycelium.
