So i found this macro-macrolepiota today. 1+ feet in diameter, but looking kinda soggy in the rain. I gently reached under the cap to brush the gills and see what kind of shape they were in. And I thought "ah damn, theyre rotten and slimey."
Turns out it wasnt the shroom that was slimey....
Ah well, I guess all of natures creatures have to eat.
pictures arent mine, theyre for illustration only.

I dont mind the fact that the slugs eat mushrooms, what bothers me is i would find a nice patch of say morels or chant's only to find that every single one had been munched, slimed and shit on by one or multiple slugs. I mean they cant just pick one or two shrooms and eat them to the ground no they have to taste everyone and leave their trail of rampage.

I thought the distinctions between Chlorophyllum rhacodes and Macrolepiota procera were the rings on the stipe and the fact that C. rhacodes prefers a wooded environment while M. procera can grow in an open field or meadow.

no, the distinction was that chlorophyllum (which means green-gilled) Used to be distinguished by having green gills and spores.
DNA work has shown that despite these differences in color and edibility, Macrolepiotas and chlorophyllums belong to the same genus.
why they chose to lump them all under chlorophyllum tho..... :P

but neither procera nor rhacodes has green gills... so it seems Macrolepiota would be a better genus name.

Well, i think macrolepiota used to simply be "lepiota" But they were found too dissimilar to the genus.
Chlorophyllum was named for its green gills before macrolepiota was a genus created for the taxon of some misfit species.
Since those formally known as Macrolepiota OUGHT to belong to the same genus as Chlorophyllum, The older Genus name is the constant, and the misfits are filed under it.
Thus we have genus names that are indicative of only a single example of their ranks.

Actually im wrong about one thing, truthfully, i only know that rhacodes was moved over to Chlorophyllum, not necessarily procera

yes I thought that was the case. I knew rhacodes was of the Chlorophyllum genus but I thought for sure procera was still macrolepiota.

Chlorophyllum and Macrolepiota are both valid, distinct genera.
Some species that used to be classified as Macrolepiota (such as C. brunneum and C. rachodes) were found to be more closely related to their toxic, green spored cousin, C. molybdites, than they are to M. procera, and were moved from Macrolepiota into Chlorophyllum since M. procera is the type species for its genus.

At some point it would be nice for someone to explain, in simple terms, the strategy for assigning these associations/lineages. That way each of us can decide for ourselves what they mean and how much weight to give them. Are you able to do that?
