inside of main house...picture dont do justice of the vibe
This is a good watch. Just found the torrent. If youve never heard of Black Bear Ranch i suggest u google it. I went there this summer for a couple days. It was pretty cool. There were only a handful of people there when i went but it was awesome. They have a bunch of cabins and a main house and the land is beautiful! its way up int eh mountains of Northern Cali. I was gona live there for a minute but the girl i was traveling with, altho she talked all about it for a while, turned out to be a lil soft for the long haul. Either way, met some great folks up there. We had a wonderful meal with them. Got to check out the main house....a friend of ours actualy had one of the cabins which was pretty cool. we stayed in there. You get a cabin i guess if your there for a while, but jsut the same the main house is cool. Only so many people stay there year round these days compared to when it started and whatnot. They have a big party every year at Solstice. we were talking about geting a movement of people back up there, but people have become kinda territorial about it it seems. Kinda like, they dont want outsiders, in where, it started out as "Free Land for Free People" just seems like they are more selective in what your intentions are up there which is fair enough i guess. I met a couple of the folks in the Doc too. The one girl that lived in the bus and grew up there i worked on her land digging fence posts for a minute. Super kind family. They fed me real well, paid me good, and just all in all were great people to be around. But yea, the documentary is cool, it talks about all the trials and tribulations, orgies, how they survived, etc, the cops checkin em out, some cult that worshipped children then had to kick out, lol, and all kinds of shit. Highly Reccomend it as i feel its quite a peice of American Counterculture history that is prety unheard of as far as ive found out talking to others about it. I feel privelaged to have visited.
During the radical fervor of the early 1970s, utopian communities dotted the American landscape. They aimed to reshape the world with "free love" and common property, and they excited controversy and fear amongst local residents across the country. Though the idea of communes is now often relegated to a naive past, Berman discovers a successful and lasting, if controversial, legacy at the influential Black Bear Ranch, in Siskiyou County, California. Premised on the idea of "Free Land for Free People," and financed by the largesse of Hollywood rock stars, the founders of Black Bear bought land deep in the wilderness and raised a rough-hewn homestead. Over the years, hundreds would join the community, and life would be complicated by conflicts about the role of women, child-rearing, proper communalist behavior, the FBI, and most traumatically, a child-snatching cult. With archival footage from the early days, and the present-day views of Black Bear members and their offspring, "Commune" is a revealing look at how our most basic choices about family, work, and the nature of our relationships send powerful and lasting shock waves through the fabric of society. Featuring herbalist Michael Tierra, who is credited with rediscovering Echinacea; internationally renowned painter Elsa Marley; and actor Peter Coyote.
