How hot does your laptop get?
    #9233866 - 11/12/08 11:24 PM (4 years, 6 months ago)

Mine gets scolding hot. I downloaded speedfan to monitor the temp and its at 70 C right now. I'm pretty sure it's been hotter. It's like a space heater. I might just turn it over and crack a couple eggs on it.

Anyway, is it going to melt the hard drive or processor? My first hard drive failed after a few days and I'm wondering if that is why.

yeah, i've looked into those, but haven't you measured your temp? a number would be interesting. strangely mine goes to 70, or at least this past time, on standby - but while using it the highest it seems to get is 63. by the way 35 bucks seems too expensive, there are pads that go for about 20 on amazon that get a statistically valid, good review.

What model is your laptop? Some laptops come with desktop CPUs for price or performance reasons, and they do tend to get extremely hot. But if it's a mobile CPU, that does seem rather toasty. Has it always run this hot, or is it a recent problem? Sometimes you just need to get in there and blow dust out of the fan, but if it's been like this since day one then that's probably not your problem.

Anyway, first be sure that your power scheme is set to "Portable/Laptop" in your power settings. Otherwise Speedstep won't be used to throttle back your CPU when it's idle.

Then you can use SpeedFan to ensure that all the fans in your system are working, and to increase their speed for better cooling.

Finally you can use RMClock or Notebook Hardware Control to undervolt your CPU and decrease its heat output.

Other than that, all I can suggest is be happy for the extra heat with winter on its way.

Thanks for all that. The model is a refurbished Dell Latitude, so it could very well have a desktop CPU. I bought it for 300 bucks a couple weeks ago on amazon.

I just downloaded Speedfan yesterday, and 70 was the maximum, but it stayed at a pretty constant 62-63 on average. It wasn't running the fans yesterday even though I had them on 100%, but today it is. Maybe I had to reboot. I'll download the voltage software if the temperature doesn't stay down today. Is below 50 C a reasonable goal? Thanks again.

I only corrected you because I said scolding once when I meant scalding and got made fun of for it.  It still slips out sometimes..

It's it a Toshiba?  They're known to run hot.  I have one, and I love it.  As long as it's not shutting itself off you're fine.  "Laptop" is kind of a misleading term with those.  They'll burn your lap if you're not careful.

Supposedly they can damage your fertility over the long term.

No, thats the temperature of the CPU thermocouple, and its an IBM.  Obviously the surface that touches my lap is much cooler than that.
