Mycena subcaerulea@@@@@
    #9202273 - 11/07/08 12:56 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

A month or so ago I posted a thread containing some bluing mycena I found. When I found out what they were they vanished and I didn't get the chance to eat them. A few days later I mailed 2 of my collected specimens to Alan but I'm not sure if they ever got them.
I checked that spot today and found them once again.

I plan on consuming them some time within the next few days. I havn't yet consumed any psychoactive mushrooms other then Amanita muscaria so this will hopefully be my first time tripping

Damn, those are beautiful mushrooms. Are you going to (attempt to) spore print them?

None of the ones I found were matured yet. From past experiences only the ones that turn brown and look like every other mycena make prints. So tomorrow morning I'm going to go back and print some. I still owe Senor Hongos a print and I'll be happy to mail some around if anyone wants them

What is the smell and taste of these things?

Cool mushrooms!  Try to get some pics of the pins when they are really blue.

Oh shit, mushroom history ?! :ooo:

I am usually very sensitive to taste and smell. When I tasted Amanita muscaria for the first time I threw up, but these mushrooms have no smell (that I can detect) and they have a very very weak mushroom taste to them. I only ate one though. They are really chewy though but maybe they aren't fully dried yet.

if they have a smell, you may need to crush one or more to bring it out. i find that many Mycenas smell the same until you crush them.

Some microscopy

Gill, 100x, brightfield illumination

Cheilocystidia, 200x, brightfield illumination

Cheilocystidia, 400x, phase contrast illumination

Spores, 1000x, ten micron grid, phase contrast illumination

The spores for Mycena subcaerulea are listed as "round or nearly so"

I don't think these are round or nearly round, spore shape matches some of the other bluing Mycena species better such as M. amicta.

The spores are a bit too round and too small to be that species, it looks like that one has relatively long, thin spores.

Fuck! Is there a chance Mycena amicta are active? Should I still consume the mushrooms or is there a possibilty of death?

http://home.online.no/~araronse/Mycenakey/amicta.htm

I checked that out and it says Mycena amicta are found in Europe while Mycena subcaerulea is an American species? Is this accurate information?

That is pretty interesting, I think amicta is also found on the west coast of the US but is probably wide spread.  The two times i found blue mycenas were both in hemlock forests one on hardwood log other on a hemlock log, now i wonder if they were differant species.  A quote from Stamets book, "John W. Allen and Gartz (1992) reports that a personal bioassay resulted in psilocybin intoxication on two occasions from two blue-footed Mycenas, a "Mycena cyanorhizza" and an unidentified Mycena, likely to be M. amicta."  Page 57 and 58.  I personaly wouldnt try eating them but it would be interesting to find out about them.

I don't think Mycenas have caused any death.  Some species contain muscarine which can cause death but only in high amounts, its not a cumulative toxin like the amatoxins.

Atropine is the antidote to muscarine, I guess I would keep a tiny bit around but I would keep the dose really really low.

Given that Mycena amicta appears in California, that is not accurate information.  The bluing Mycena species tend to be semi-rare and widely distributed.

Do these stain blue when damaged or are they just blue by themselves?

If the stem is turning blue in places its broken, I would eat a small amt.  If it starts out blue and doesn't get dramatically more blue where damaged, I would be much less likely to eat it.

Nice microscopy!  I quoted this because it doesn't appear with the photos.

The spores are described as globose.  The Pacific Northwest Council describes Puffballs and Earthstars that way.  Think of a Puffball.  http://www.svims.ca/council/Lycope.htm ; I am and have been relatively certain these are Mycena subcaerulea.  I will be interested in viewing these myself when Enpo sends them to me.  I suppose there aren't any photos of M. subcaerulea spores available.  Words are tricky; photographs aren't.

Are you saying none of the spores are round?  I only see three spores in that photo.

Well about 10-20 minutes before I ate one of them I had some Kentucky Fried Chicken and I got really bad gas. I usually get gas from KFC but this time I was ripping ass. I don't know if the mushroom maybe amplified this or not.

I went back to the spot this morning and none of the mushrooms are matured yet.
