possible new TEK? maybe better than PF
    #9163495 - 10/31/08 08:26 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

ok i took 2 of my 80% colonized pf TEK 1/2 pint brf Jars and emptied them into a sandwich baggy i then sealed the bag and crushed up both the cakes.......now heres where its kind of confusing to me but i will get back to this parts after i explain my terrarium..............
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i have this box for my terrarium (ITS THE 1896 model)

www.sterilite.com/Category.html?Section=Storage&ProductCategory=42#

what i plan on doing is making it simple (without humidifier) and putting 2in. of saturated perlite in the bottom of the box.....then i plan on putting a metal screen 2in. above the perlite..to hold my substrate.....          also i will have 2 screwdrive sized holes about 2 inches side byside on each end of the box for ventilation

so what we have from bottom of terrarium up is....
2inch. saturated perlite
2inches above perlite is a screen...which will hold my substrate
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now to my substrate...................i am not sure exactly what im doing with my substrate but i just kind of plan on leaving it is it is if there in no better suggestions.................

i put 2 of pf TEK 1/2 pint brf jars in a sandwhich baggy and crushed them up pretty fine......now they are much less whiter than what they were before so i will let them colonize for a few more days

after this i plan on emptying the baggy onto the screen

and whalah.....a possible simple tek?

any suggestions of input is VERY WELCOME (ANYTHING)

uhm-- probably not.  if you break the cake up like that and then stick it directly on the screen with no casing layer it will probably fruit once and then dry out.  That's just my sense though I'm not very experienced so see what others say about it.  also, if the Perlite is entirely covered up then how will you add water when the level gets low?

if it's only 80% colonized, you're exposing the other 20% to contams when you remove it from the jar.  your idea could work, but i'd say it's an unnecessary risk.  if your going to spawn to a bulk substrate, you might as well skip the pf tek part of it.  get you some grains and go that route.

definitely not a great idea. you need to supply your substrate with water while it is fruiting. remember, mushrooms are a majority water. if your going to break them up, take the time to make a casing layer and throw that on the top and you'll get great results. if you're not going to case, then leave them in jar form and fruit them like that. there are teks to dunk and roll in verm and all sorts of things...but personally I opt to go for more volume than cakes.

the problem i have with grains is i have never worked with them before
i have no pressure cooker
and i have only had one pf jar quit colonizing half way through and never had a contam out of 20 jars so far

Based on you not having a PC .... I would spawn (mix) 100% colonized PF cakes with a bulk substrate (coir is simple and available) in a tray or trays that fit in your FC.  Then when the bulk sub is colonized you can fruit it in your chamber cased or uncased.

That's what I would do.

I enjoy these theoretical experiments and admire your ingenuity.  After reading many of these, the common response I find my self thinking is this:  Why re-invent the wheel?

We already know what works well.  Just do it.

A little experimentation to deviate from the tek when the needs arise are understandable to adapt to supplies available etc but why waste time, money and risk to deviate for any idea that may or may not even work at all?

I also suspise many of these "Hey I got an idea, will it work" threads are most likely from folks who have not tried the PF tek or anything beyond it.  If they had, they would be busy working on that without energy to be thinking about new ways to grow contams and dry subs.
Keep it up and good luck Bro!
