Yeah I speculated that it could be a desiccant, we have some stuff that looks similar at work but it's more blue.

I don't remember exactly... You would hit the metal ball with static electricity and the metal leafs would fly apart... then when you spray the thorium in, the leafs would come back together. Measuring the time it took was supposed to tell you something. (I maybe mis-remembering... too many different gadgets like this when I was younger.)
