Yachats Festival Mushrooms On Oregon Coast This Weekend

 Yachats is calling all fun-guys and fun-gals to its 9th annual Village Mushroom Fest, to be held this weekend, Friday night through Sunday. This three-day culinary and nature lovers event promises superb food and exceptional opportunities to learn from leading mycologists about the role of mushrooms in forest ecology - all free of charge. The festival includes 20 expert led mushroom walks, four one-hour mushroom talks, a workshop teaching how to grow your own oyster mushrooms, fungi books and arts, a beautiful slideshow of more than 300 mushrooms, culinary mushroom markets, and live entertainment with the emphasis on fun! Proceeds from this year's festival will benefit the Yachats Community Health Clinic.
The festival opens Friday night at 6 p.m. with the popular Yachats Village Fungi Feast. This year’s theme is "Medi-Moroccan" with magnificent mushroom dishes prepared by Yachats restaurant chefs, fiery live music by the Burning Truth Tribe, belly dancers, a tantalizing desserts auction and a silent auction. The cost is $30. Tickets may be purchased at the Yachats Visitors Center, 800-929-0477, 541-547-3530, or email info@yachats.org. The dinner is held at the Yachats Commons, Hwy 101 and W 4th St.
During the whole weekend, Yachats restaurants will continue offering mushroom dishes, and mushroom books and arts can be found at local shops and galleries.
On Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, look under the big tent in front of Yachats Village Market at Hwy 101 and W 4th St. for a cultivated culinary mushrooms market, mushroom facts, and delicious samples of grilled mushrooms. Unified Grocers Mushroom buyer and produce managers will be available to answer questions. The tent is sponsored by Yachats' Village Market, Ostrum Mushrooms & Unified Grocers.
Saturday offers a speakers forum, entitled “Ecology for Everyone”, in Rm. 3 of the Yachats Commons. Hours are 10:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., with a lunch break from 12:30 – 1 p.m. The forum includes one-hour scientific presentations for the general public by renowned mycologists Drs. Dan Luoma and Nancy Weber, both from the Corvallis OSU Dept. of Forest Ecosystems & Society; Dave Pilz, Consultant and Writer, PilzWald – Forest Applications of Mycology; and Dr. Steven Carpenter, Abbey Lane Labs, Philomath.
At 3:30 p.m. in the Picnic Shelter behind the Yachats Commons, Dr. Carpenter - joined by Dave Pilz and Kim Kittredge of Northwest Mycological Consultants - will lead a workshop for the general public teaching how to grown your own oyster mushrooms. The workshop has a $1 fee to cover cost of materials. Bring a $1 bill as they cannot make change.
Between 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday you can find a delicious lunch of mushroom pizza in the Commons Kitchen. Salad and desserts will also be available. This is an annual benefit for the Yachats Youth & Family Activities Program, which serves all of South Lincoln County.
Enjoy wine tasting on Saturday at two Yachats wine bars: at The Wine Place from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. (Hwy 101 & W 4th St.), and at the Yachats Wine Trader from 2 - 5 p.m., (Hwy 101 & Ocean View Dr.).
On Saturday and Sunday, view Educational Displays and an extensive native forest Fungi Exhibit in Room 8 of the Yachats Commons (N side of building by Bank of the West). The displays are provided and staffed by the Lincoln County Mycological Society, Cascade Mycological Society, and the North American Truffling Society, and will include fresh examples of both edible and toxic wild mushrooms, posters, books and other materials presenting current research on the ecology of wild mushrooms. You also have an opportunity to ask questions and chat about fungi with people who love and know them.
The Harvest Farmers’ Market, - the last Yachats Farmers Market of the season - will be held at the Yachats Commons on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This indoor/outdoor market will feature fresh local produce, fresh and dried native forest fungi, mushroom food, and local arts and crafts.
Join a mushroom walk at Cape Perpetua, just two miles south of Yachats. Over the weekend, twenty guided mushroom walks of all levels - introductory, intermediate and advanced - will leave from the Cape Perpetua Visitors Center. These happen on Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and on Sunday between 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
During the festival weekend, sign up for walks at the front desk of the Cape Perpetua Visitors Center: in person or by phone, (541) 547-3289.
There will be no advance registration for the walk. You must arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled walk time.
Walks will be led by professional and amateur mycologists, forest ecologists and naturalists. Walks are held on excellent easy trails in the spectacular coastal mature and old growth forest of Cape Perpetua. Outdoor clothing, sturdy walking shoes/boots, and rainwear are advised. There is some limited handicapped accessibility. Self-guided walks are also possible during festival weekend.
While at the Cape, stop at the visitor center’s theater to watch a Fungi Slideshow produced by OSU doctoral candidate Matt Trappe. The slideshow includes over 300 color images with each mushroom’s scientific name and common name identified.
There will be free shuttle service both days between Yachats & the Cape Perpetua Trails. If you choose not take the free shuttle from town, please note there is limited parking at Cape Perpetua and a $5 parking fee (or) you may display your Oregon Coast Passport or Siuslaw National Forest Passport. Passports may be purchased at Cape Perpetua Visitors Center.

I went to this, also last year. Its a pretty mild little event. Needless to say, no mention of actives other than A muscaria at all. I went on an "advanced" foray. Since nobody else signed up, it was just my wife and I with a mycologist for 2 hours! Awesome! I also attended the first ecology for everybody lecture, it was about symbiosis between non-chlorophylic plants and mycorhizal fungi. Actually pretty cool stuff! This even was a little richer last year, but its still fun for a place like Yachats.
