What do you Pick, a trade or something your passionate about?

I always figured id go to university and have a wonderful experience and expand my horizons and get a high paying satisfying career at the end of it .. As ive come into my early 20's ive realized this to be largely illusory for many people.. (my friends leave misdirected, unsatisfied and in debt - most often.)
My parents have been preaching about the "financial freedom" in the booming trades sectors, suggesting that i might reconsider my academic future in exchange for financial security.
I backlashed with rhetoric; "ill excell at what im passionate about" ... "money doesn't matter, ill choose my direction based on happiness" etc..
Now, unqualified with an assortment of deadend jobs beckoning at 23, + with a mind not so sharp because of drug abuse, i am seriously considering Trades.. Welding to be exact.
Welding pays great, its a skill i would like to have (would love to get into metal sculpture, and bike building.) It's also cheap and short school with plenty of highpaying apprentice and journeymen jobs available everywhere + eventually if you play your cards right, international job possibilities.
The only sacrifice would be not going to university. Im not sure im that kinda guy anyways, a bit on the fringes, dont like being told what to do, im not a college kid.
If i was to go, it would be to go into biology or environmental sciences. These would probably be satisfying and stimulating careers, but i dont think the schooling would be the stimulating social environment of a mostly pointless arts degree..
Ive accepted that my parents were right, money is important, and perhaps ive accepted that LIFE IS COMPRIMISE. perhaps..
Work to live, or live at work? - finding a balance between surviving a career, + making enough money to do what you want is tough.
How do ya'll deal with choosing a future?

Well I've been good with math and science my entire life and really enjoy the subjects. I decided to go into engineering because it utilizes those skills and creativity plays a large part in it. I like the idea of using my math and science skills to design and create something that is needed to help advance the world. I want to get into work with Bio-fuels, but we'll see.
Bottom line, do something you'll enjoy doing for a long period of your life. Working is a necisary evil if you want to live comfortably. A trade school is not a bad idea either. What is it 2 years and you get certified in it and can go out into the work force and get a decent paying job. I heard the elevator repair trade is $$$ as well.
Also, college is not the answer for everyone. I see these kids majoring in bullshit areas (sociology, poli sci, philosphy etc.) where they won't get a job unless they want to be a teacher/professor. To me, that is a waste of money. If you are spending all sorts of money to go to college you may as well major in an area that you can find a job in.

You know...At this point with the economy I have chosen school. I could certainly find something I'm passionate about, and be MUCH more happy...It's just not realistic for me.
Now days money does buy some sort of happiness. I don't want to be rich, but I want to be able to travel etc...You know have a ok house, nothing great.
5 years ago I would have said something you were passionate about. I am kind of fortunate though...My passion is computers, and I went to school for them.
So, in a way I definitely enjoy it, but you know I could definitely be happier doing something less strenuous for less money.

You can get in a community college, or something like ITT-Tech to get a 2 year degree...You will have to work your way up, but you will be fine in the route.

But what if the only way I can do what I love is to go to Uni? That's my position. No way I'm going to land an engineering job without a degree unless I educated myself and started my own business.

Careful, you will pay around $35k for that 2 year degree.
I went to ITT. Pretty easy school all in all. But HELLA expensive.
I went for Comp Networking.

Ive realized this too - all the fun classes are unemployable.
I have a real hard time deciding because i don't properly know how to research this sort of thing.
I was stoned and graded from a shitty storefront education centre and completely neglected ALL information given to me about post secondary education. Trying to learn about getting a science degree is daunting..
I figure at the worst, i could do the welding without taking loans, get a decent Job right out of school with benefits, holidays, etc... and if 5 years down the road wasn't happy with my career situation (in case money doesn't buy happiness) i could always go back to school after buying property, a home, travel, etc...
I feel like im not ready to hop into a science degree being a recovering drug addict just assimilating into a normal life for the first time in years.. but i gotta do something, the clock is ticking... (1st time ive ever felt like this.)
Money has started to feel pretty important these days, now that i dont have any.

Not perhaps, it is. Know that and youll already be way better off.
Other than that, youll have to make your own decisions. I didnt start my bachelors degree in earnest until I was 24. Im no college kid, but I still like it. That said, that may not be the best choice for you. College is not the best choice for most people.

Yea I did 2 years there, and then did 4 more at a traditional school...But it gave me the knowledge to be ready for the other school, and gave me the knowledge to study/pass my A+/Network+ exams. It also got me a job. So, all in all I was pretty happy with it.
The money sucked, but hey...It was an investment.

I just kinda started Doing it. I was already a pretty Good welder on Stick/ MIG/oxy. Chopping cars and building wacky shit. Jumped on a TIG and got couldn't put it down.
I got a State Grant that paid almost entirely for a class or two. I rarely showed up or cared, but wanted to use the machines to teach myself. Gave up with that. I hada bud that had a TIG machine I could use,if i paid for materials. I'd show up after work and Weld till my fucking eyes wanted to explode. Seriously, practice, practice, practice. Countless hours off practice. Got a shit job,and worked up.
with each job( depending on what your welding) you often have to have every new certifications and tests and bullshit.
I could go on,but i just walked in the door, and I'm pretty fucking tired.
TIG is pretty fucking hard. It helps to learn Stick/MIG first. Learning Oxy/acy welding will be the single biggest help to transfer to TIG. The movements are the same. Expect countless hours getting pissed off welding a millions scrap pieces of shit together before each new position or angle or whatever clicks, and it all comes together.
For TIG Be very Good at Stainless and Alumi. Have some Knowledge and experience in Chro-moly,magnesium,and what not. The first two are your bread and butter.
I fucking Love it. It's pretty fucking Hard Work, but there's just a special pride that comes with a trade. Especially nowadays. Not to mention welding is pretty crucial to everything i enjoy in life. Whether it's Chopping old cars, old bikes,or come crazy junkyard art , it's all welding and metalwork. Still working on getting a job in one of those, but fuck it, i'm Doing something that is a direct segway to what i love, and thats close enough. Although it is entirely Cool in it's own right. I still have never gotten Bored with it.
as far as my qualifications. This was Quoted from another thread.

GTAW certification GMAW cert. SMAW cert structural welding cert. (technical term is ANSI/AWS D 1.1, D 1.3 and D 1.4, i think. ) Random other Bullshit mandated test/certs that all go by crazy alphanumeric names.
mandated drafting classes for Formal blueprints.
I need to get a pressure welding cert. So i can weld on pipelines and shit.
I What i do.

Those jobs are slowly disappearing. Most of them want some type of work experience, which I have, so that's no problem.
At the moment I'm finishing up with this other school, and so I don't have time to train for another job. Definitely true, and worth a look for EVERYONE HERE.
If you have a little computer knowledge, and you have the time to study for the A+ tests you can easily pass them. The books prepare you even if you have no idea what it is.
