I like sparassis species, but only eat them fresh.
They are to chewy when they dry out i think.

Alan,
The matsutake in the mountains are usually associated with older hemlock and lodgepole pine, although I've never really searched lodgepole forests. I've also heard that the coastal shore pines can provide considerable quatities. They seem to like at least an inch of duff.

I was excited to find gomphus for the first time, but if you're looking to eat them don't get your hopes up. They arent very good.
