Can't maintain interest in anything for any length of time
    #9039674 - 10/06/08 09:21 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

In my typical day I'll feign interest in many things throughout the day. I'll start playing with a synthesizer for like 8 minutes then get bored and stop. I'll play with Csound and then get bored. I'll read a thread really intensely, about god knows what, physics, Ouspensky, mushroom cult (on a variety of forums, not just here), then suddenly not care anymore and stop reading. Then I'll maybe hit Wikipedia. "Hmm..Silverlight is cool.." and I'll read about it. Maybe get to the last paragraph and get bored. Listen to some internet radio for a few minutes, change it cause I'm bored of it. Tower defense, bored of it. I might go to a bookstore, read some books. I barely get past the back of the cover before I'm bored. Find some other thread, marathon some web comics for a while and then get bored of it.

I can't hold interest in anything for any reasonable time and it's literally driving me insane.

And I'm out of the house for work at 7:15 and I get home at 6:00, so it's not a problem of having too much time. And I'm not broke.

Every single one of those activities is on the computer... I get the same thing when I am on the PC for a long time every day, day after day.

It's called boredom. Go do something out of your ordinary routine or dont get on the computer for a few days. Less is more.

Sounds like you need some amphetamines. You may have what they call ADD. They prescribe amphetamines for it, so go to the doctor tell him how you feel. And maybe you'll get adderall. Fun fun.

Then you're probably bored with yourself, and not something else. Maybe it's time for you to change yourself into something that might interest you. :hehehe:

Yeah I think MushroomTrip came closest to what I was already thinking. I've been pretty sure I'm a boring guy for a little while now. Not sure how to change it. But I'm working on it

I get the same way. When I have too much adventure/uncertainty/wandering I start craving that boredom though.

Well you can start thinking about the traits and qualities you would like to see in yourself, you must have an idea about how you would ideally be. Then work on modeling your personality in that direction.

You know, there are a few things I've been looking to strengthen in my personality for a long while but it just isn't happening. Any advice on how to really make this happen?

I've basically just been thinking about "being" these traits, igniting them then just letting them go, etc. I havn't written it down every morning or anything...maybe I'll try that.

To freddurgan: I'm kind of the same way, but not quite. If I'm on the internet my mind is super scattered. I have multiple windows open almost all the time. I think watching TV and using the internet actually exacerbates this tendency. Try staying off of your computer and not watching TV for a few days to a week.

I don't know what to do with myself if I'm not on the computer or the TV. I really, really don't. Not a clue in hell. I just end up looking at the wall or something. That's a really sad fact but it's true. Unless it's the weekend and then I'm out drinking, which isn't much better.

I am kind of the same. I can't play a game...even though I will really like a game, for longer than 15-20 minutes. I can't focus and study for longer than 20-30 minutes...mostly because I try really really hard. But I understand that because studying isn't the funnest thing in the world.

I can't watch movies without having an urge to do something else for longer than...30ish minutes.

I don't know...I do a lot of shit all day long because of it. It is whatever to me though, I have gotten use to it.

I can't even watch porn movies that are only 15-20 minutes long.

I get bored and fast forward to each position and then I try to find another porn video and I do the same thing.

I guess it could be a positive. I would really just rather...sit down, get work done, then sit down, and enjoy doing something for hours and hours.

Well for the porn, I can understand. When I'm watching porn I only have one thing in mind (and it's based on seconds of enjoyment, not hours).

To freddurgan: If you get bored enough, you will find something to do. Do you think you'll actually sit and look at the wall for 6 hours a day because you can't think of anything else to do? Eventually you will say f*ck it, I'm gonna start doing xyz.

Yeah that's actually happening now. I guess it takes a week or so of just bottoming out boredom but a fire somehow gets lit under my ass. I'm not really thrilled that I have no control over my motivation in life but for now I'll take the semi-up swing that I'm getting..

Honestly I'm surprised I wasn't condemned in this thread for being lame or a whiner. Gives me hope that I'm not lost at sea.

i've lost my inspiration/motivation to do the work i have to do.  and some of my work kind of determines whether or not my professor gets his tenure or not

sometimes we just hit low points.  alas, the computer is partly my downfall, as well; so many wonderful things about it and the internet, and so many bad things

Take a summer off and walk the Pacific Crest Trail. You need the a change of perspective.
