 Teenager caught with drug pipe [BRACEVILLE]

A BRACEVILLE teenager was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Jacob Bulanda, 17, 3925 Mitchell St., Braceville, was given an Oct. 20 court date.
Deputy Josh Slattery reported he stopped the vehicle driven by Bulanda near Main and Jackson streets in Gardner because it did not have a license plate light.
The deputy indicated Bulanda and both passengers appeared nervous and would not look at him, so he received permission to search the car.
In the center console, Deputy Slattery found a glass pipe with marijuana residue.

That depends.
In my experience, if the kid is white and/or rich, getting caught doing drugs makes national headlines.
I grew up in Plano after the supposed heroin "problem" there. It made national headlines, MTV even made a shitty movie about it.
About 18 kids died in two years in a suburb of over 250,000 people. Meanwhile, in East Dallas, untold numbers of poor white, mexican, and black kids died of every drug under the sun, and it wasn't so much as mentioned.
This kind of reporting drives me nuts.

I have found just the opposite to be true. I don't even recall a routine minor paraphernalia charge making national news in years. The few exceptions would be in the 'Entertainment' magazines, such as a former child star, or a washedup or up and coming pantiless starlet, who usually relish the publicity.
It's more likely an average rich/white kid would never get charged for such mundane things. But I agree a poor minority kid might. There is certainly evidence that more minorities get arrested and jailed more often than non-minorities for similar offences.
But back to very minor arrests making small town obscure local newspapers, I do find something interesting... Maybe not most, but in certainly very many areas of the USA, getting caught with a roach, a pipe, a joint or even up to an ounce of pot is a misdemeanor, similar to littering, although littering usually has a higher penalty. But you rarely see a headline about a kid caught dropping a gum wrapper even though it's a more serious charge, both in penalty and damage against the community. I guess something drug related is more sensational and sells more papers. Then again, in a small town any news is BIG news, just not newsworthy.
