FOUR people are facing possible prison sentences for their roles in the production of hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of cannabis at former Probation Service offices.
The case concerns the discovery of a huge, sophisticated cannabis factory at the property on Longlands Road, Middlesbrough, last May.
“The police found a commercial concern designed to produce cannabis on a massive scale,” prosecutor Sarah Mallett told Teesside Crown Court at an earlier hearing.
“It was clear that the intention was for future expansion.”
The crops could have yielded £330,000 of skunk cannabis, with 2,136 cultivated plants and the remains of 1,719 harvested plants found.
The set-up costs at the large, old building were estimated at £100,000. Of its 80 areas, 21 had been converted for cultivation, with others being converted or used for storage or living accommodation.
The arrangement included an extensive air filtration system, electrical cable, ducting and hosepipes crossing from room to room, covering floors and suspended by wires.
It used such a “phenomenal” amount of power, bypassing the electricity system, that insulation cables were melting and it could have been fatal to touch unprotected wiring.
Holes were cut through walls, ceilings and windows, doors were removed and a “membrane” covered floors and was taped to walls.
External windows and doorways were sealed with specialist anti-detection film and taping to reflect light and stop heat loss.
The property also contained hundreds of specialised, high-wattage growing lamps, transformer units, fans, water butts, high-grade chemical plant fertilisers and compost.
A police operation at the premises took eight days.
This week Liaquet Ali, 50, of Clifton Street, Middlesbrough, was the last defendant to plead guilty to a cannabis cultivation plot at Teesside Crown Court.
He was scheduled to stand trial, but admitted conspiracy to produce the Class C drug between October 31, 2006, and May 22 last year. Judge Peter Armstrong bailed him and adjourned the case, saying: “All options will be open.”
Three other accused, all from Middlesbrough - Shafiq Aziz, 39, of Fountains Drive; Damion Clenaghan, 22, of Cobham Street; and Kaleem Khan, 26, of Lothian Road - previously admitted the charge. All four will be sentenced together later.
At a previous hearing, a trio of Chinese men caught caring for the plants were each jailed for 18 months after a judge heard they were exploited as slave labour.
