Yah let's rename the other one!

All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter." --Max Planck

Well... we can rename it: The Official Fall 2008/Winter 2009 Azurencens/Cyanescens/Stuntzii Thread!
It might not fit though.

Fine, I'll do it, unless someone beats me to it.

I'm not a fan of official threads for a few reasons. I hate to wade through 87 posts for someone that posts a "what are these" post. In fact, I won't do it. Identifications can get lost that way unless you want to babysit a thread.
We could create special threads for all the common species found here too. The Cubensis thread, The Cinctulus Thread, The Mycena subcaerulea Thread. I suppose it serves some function but I have never really understood it.

Well trust me The thread will get baby sat because if anyone is like me I check the thing constantly, but for the most part I think ID requests should not be posted in offical threads unless your a regular and you know. But Somone needs to make a new find to start the offical thread, you've got to have some bad ass pictures as a starter Im hoping to start an azurescen page soon :0

Those are two major pluses for official threads, however, n00bs sometimes post in them and ask for ID's. We get that in other threads too. Most of the time a mod will tell them to post their own thread but I know I won't be in there doing it.
I have my thread views and post views set to 50 so I can watch more threads and posts. Official threads make watching posts a little more difficult, especially if someone is posting a lot of pictures. I just end up ignoring them.
Aside from the fact I've always suspected some of the official threads are started more out of ego than organization ease.

I like the offical threads because they make the season read like a novel. There's tension and excitment, woe and redemption... it's all there man.

If a noob posts an id request in an official thread, they are quickly redirected. It doesn't take a mod.
A good official thread becomes a micro community. Those who are interested check it regularly. I read (or at least scanned) every post in the Bay Area thread from last season and never had a problem "watching" posts. If anything, official threads make watching posts easier, because the board isn't clogged with hundreds of PNW cyan posts or whatever the case may be.
So what if ego plays a part?
