I've played every one, from Civ1 to Civ4 and Civ4 really is the best.
There's so much more customization, and more of the military units are useful. Big navies and air forces aren't optional, you can't just have a stack of 20 artillery and destroy anything. The whole game is much more balanced.
Don't get me wrong, I loved III, but IV is really the best of the bunch I think.
You definitely need the Beyond The Sword expansion to get the full effects.

I mean, in Civ3 you could have a huge stack of artillery and bomb down a group of troops all down to one bar of life.
Now you can't bombard that aren't in cities, you have to directly attack with your artillery which usually ends with them all fucked up.

i wish sid mier would redo alpha centauri. its a badass game and i think that a makeover would make it even more badass. upgraded graphics, new units. would kick ass.

Not really. Y'know, Alpha Centauri is actually a collectors item since it is rare? I sold my retail copy for more than I paid for it.
The newest one, Civ. 4 with the expansions is the best. Alot of the redundant unit movement and city management has been consolidated to make the play smoother and efficient than the previous ones.
I have beat it on 'Emperor' difficulty before, but usually have to play 'Monarch' to win.

did you guys play Colonization?
it came out i think 13 years ago or something like that, so i guess i wouldn't be surprised if nobody has...
it was made by the same developers as civilization.
and in a lot of ways, it's like Civ, but it's focused on one era only.
you get a ship full of pioneers and set sail out to establish colonies in the new world. your colonies produce goods and you can trade them with the natives (assuming you don't want to just butcher them) but most of the time you'll want to take your goods back to your homeland and sell it for a nice profit... as time goes on the greedy king will raise taxes on your colonies and you have the option of declaring your independence and if you can survive the onslaught of the king's powerful army then you've won the game!
there's a lot more to it, it's a pretty complex game.
the good news is though, that they've been working on finally making a "sequel" to this game and it's supposed to be out this month. they are calling it sid meier's civilization IV: colonization... but it's not an expansion pack to civ 4, its it's own game. i'm pretty excited about it.

Civilization 4 with expansions possibly might be the best game I have ever played, I have never had so much fun playing a single player game before.

e: just looked up 3-4 posts and someone already posted this, that's what I get for not reading the entire topic.
