Want to make oyster spawn what's my best option?

Hi, I would like to try and grow some oyster mushroom indoors, but wanted to make my own spawn. So far Ive been looking at the kits and plugs...with 100 plugs being the cheapest. If I wanted to use wbs to make spawn which would work best. Could I just put 1 or 2 plugs into a quart jar of wbs? or would it be better to use the spawn from a kit for this. I don't completely understand about senescense but was just what would give me the best results. And would not like to spend more money than I have to. Thanks!

Wild bird seed is not an exact thing: the mixtures vary. In any case, this wont be the best thing for oysters. A common spawn mix used for oysters is hardwood shavings mixed with bran 4:1 by weight and wetted to about 70% water. You can use dowel spawn to start it.

Yes you can use dowels to inoculate jars of WBS. Grain oyster spawn is perfectly usable and very common.
Oysters are hardy mofo's!
Inoculating WBS with dowels is fine. Scoop up 1-3 tables spoons for each jar and shake.

Hey, I've been using rye almost exclusively for making oyster spawn! It works great, and provides nutrition for the nutritionally dead paper and cardboard I spawn to!
Plugs should work, as long as you keep them clean. However, you'll get a heck of a lot more milage out of your purchase if you go with a pure culture. I've gotten LC syringes from Sporeworks and used those to make more LC. This means I can use more LC per spawn jar and get faster results!
If you're buying dowels or kits, there's no telling how many transfers have been made to get to that point, especially with dowels. If you go with a kit, many vendors will also sell ready made grain spawn, which will also go farther and colonize faster due to increased spawn surface area.

I'm currently looking for cultures of the following species:
Calocybe indica, Chlorophyllum rachodes, Lentinula boryana, Polyporus umbellatus

Ok, I checked out sporeworks and saw the culture syringe you were referring to. Do you know how many cc’s this is? I’m just trying to figure out how many jars one syringe could do. I’m pretty comfortable with syringes and grain to grain transfers right now but don’t have any experience with liquid culture yet. The plugs just seemed like the better value though? Even if I put 3 plugs per grain jar I would still be able to get about 30 jars from a 100 plug pack. I’ll have to start looking into the lc though. I don’t know much about it and this doesn’t really relate but would a lc be a monoculture? Just curious. Thanks!

Syringes are 10cc!
Making a liquid culture is easy. Check the FAQ section of this site. You can also whip up some agar and put a drop of LC onto some plates. You're making an investment here by buying cultures!
The term "monoculure" refers to growing one type of organism exclusively, like industrial farms do. It would probably be an isolated dikaryotic strain, yes.
