Computer Headphone Jack Problem (Only in one ear)
    #8937706 - 09/16/08 05:29 AM (2 months, 17 days ago)

My computer's headphone jack hasnt been working very well for a while. Id have to bend the end of the headphone jack whatever way till it finally came out stereo the way it should. ive tried it with various headphones and it does the same thing with all of them. its definitely something thats going wrong in the jack of the computer. how can i fix this? maybe theres something i can take apart on my laptap where the headphone jack is that i need to reconnect? something is obviously loose or screwed up in some way that is only working when i move it a certian waay. im sure most of you have experienced this in some way or another with headphones. its happened to me in the past as well with other headphone jacks but it seems ive hit the end of the road with this one and i absolutely need help at this point otherwise i wont be able to use it anymore and that is not an option since its the only laptap i have. i wont be getting a new one and at this point its basically impossible to get it in stereo anymore so i really need some help.

thanks any info is appreciated.

That sucks.

1. Try cleaning the inside of the jack with metho on a toothpick, or something else that can get in there. Failing that,
2. Buy a USB sound adaptor. They have their own jacks. I have this, but it's pretty crappy quality and you're better off getting something that doesn't cost $4. Like this.
3. Buy USB headphones. They also have some on dealextreme.

This would be my recommendation.

if you didn't already know, this is what the inside of a stereo jack looks like (notice how it's set up so different pieces of metal touch different parts of the plug when it's plugged in, these are the seperate channels, right and left, and the ground):

if you look at the plug, there's three sections.  The tip and middle are the right and left channel, and the bottom is the ground.

maybe take a prod and try and bend the connects back?

*either way, knowing how something works is the first step to fixing it :goodluck:

More often than not it isn't bent, but oxidation (non-conductive) that is the problem.

seems like they could use gold-plated connectors in something as expensive as a laptop.  It can't be that much more expensive.

*(if it's a desktop) oh, if it's a sound card, then you could try and get it replaced?  and if it's integrated into your motherboard, then getting a cheap sound card would be an option.

Much more profitable for the manufacturers to have somebody buy a new laptop than to spend a few cents per laptop on a better plug. (Same goes for power jacks that break.)

alright so im looking into some stuff.. i plan to order very soon so i can finally listen again with my headphones... fucking irritating not being able to do it at all lately. i looked at a lot of the usb headphone adaptors on amazon and many seem to be rated poorly... the only one that wasnt was the koss usb dongle adaptor which is 30 bucks! all the rest are much cheaper but have horrible reviews. so im not quite sure what to do... unless zoudens recommendation of the 12 dollar deal extreme site's cmedia adaptor works ok.
what do you guys think?

either i go with the usb headphone adaptor or i buy actual usb headphones, but that would probably be quite a lot more expensive, especially for a good pair. probably best off getting a usb headphone adaptor i can rely on thatll absolutely work and just as good as my headphone input used to work.

wutcha think?

For $12 with free shipping, it's worth a shot.

alright, thanks buddy  i think ill probably try it. you think maybe you could find another review somewhere of that though? maybe just one more thing to help me enforce positive thinking about this item so i can feel good about purchasing it. i found another decent looking one for 15 too so now im kinda thinking about that one also which had decent reviews. regardless of how little i spend, i want to make the right decision or as right as i can cus i dont have much to waste.

At least that one has a recognisable name (C-media). The $3 one that I bought is completely generic, requires no drivers, and worked instantly. However the volume was on 100% with no way to change it which I didn't like so I put it in my cupboard with all my other dealextreme junk. They almost never sell brand-name stuff because they just take things straight from the vast factories of China and put it on container ships.
