Mirror Image of HDD
    #8951380 - 09/18/08 07:58 PM (2 months, 15 days ago)

I did a bit of googling and wasn't about to find anything in the limited search that I performed so I figured I would just ask someone.

I just bought a new HDD, and need to copy over my entire old HDD. Problem is they are both SATA, and I only have one SATA hookup. Also I do not have my XP disk with me(it was pirated anyway). Is there a program that allows me to make an image of my entire HDD onto a DVD or multiple DVDs, swap HDD's and then install on new drive?

If anyone can help I would appreciate it, I would rather not have to wait for my XP install disk to be mailed to me, and go through the trouble of reinstalling all my programs.

Thanks in advance!

I dont believe there is such a program :frown:

Also, when making a mirror image of a HDD theres a good chance that it just flat out wont work (well as a boot disk anyway)

If you need more info PM me as I think its against the rules to post links and stuff

and if its not against the rules PM me and Ill post here

You need an imaging program such as Ghost.  Images the drive with compression, you can load that image onto the new drive no problem.

Correct.  There are also a few free programs out there that will "image a drive".  Remember, most DVDs are only around 4GB, so even if you have a small drive, if it is mostly full, you are going to need a lot of media.  It is probably cheaper to by an external SATA enclosure ($20 to $40) that connects via USB.  You will still need imaging software, but don't have to worry about the optical media.

Yes, a good open-source alternative to Ghost is XXClone.

I bought one for $8 from dealextreme.com the other day. Free shipping. I'm such a DX whore.

Cool, they ship international.  I'll have to check them out.
(I hate newegg because they refuse to ship to my location.)

I've never even been to the newegg site, but it sounds pretty cool

Solve the problem by replacing your motherboard so you have more than 1 SATA channel. Even some bottom of the line boards come with 2+ SATA channels. Once you have the board installed, either copy the data over and leave the OS in tact on the old drive, or use an imaging program to mirror the old HDD.

Motherboards are very inexpensive nowadays and are easily installed.

I doubt you find a logic board that takes the same memory and cpu as he already has for less than the price of an external enclosure.

Probably not cheaper, but who the hell wants USB as the primary mode of data transfer? Way too slow for me. Besides, replacing the motherboard allows for an internal installation of the HDD. I suppose the other workaround for this could be to simply buy a cheap SATA PCI card and complete your data transfer that way until you can swap the drives out.

Seuss, I thought logic boards were the phrase used for Macs? Doesn't he have a PC? Just curious.

The term is fairly generic... logic board, system board, mother board, etc...

> who the hell wants USB as the primary mode of data transfer?

For a one time transfer, whats the issue?

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm going to pursue one of these two paths.

or
> look to borrow an IDE HDD, and transfer to that, swap SATA drives, and then transfer to the new HDD.

On the motherboard topic, I could do that, but currently I'm not trying to pour too much more $ or time into this PC. I've already had to put more thought into this HDD than I had initially planned. On my old PC's I've always had IDE, and was easily about to hookup the second drive as a slave.

The one additional bonus you get with the first (external enclosure) is you now have an extra external hard drive that you can dump stuff to and take with you, use as a backup, etc.  The one additional bonus to the second (borrow IDE) solution is that you don't spend any money.
