 Possible Spyware? Help please!

Hey guys and girls,
Im sure everyone see's a million of these type of posts but i've got some sort of problem with my computer which i've never seen before.
My mum, being the computer illiterate idiot that she is  downloaded/accepted some sort of virus/spyware that is causing me much anguish. I've downloaded AVG and got rid of most of it, but one problem remains.
When i do a search in google, and the results come up, everytime i click on a result it opens up a new window. At the bottom of my browser where it displays the page that im connecting too, it has some funny IP address, and then it connects to some bullshit phony page that usually consists of some site trying to sell me something. To connect to a page i have to copy the URL below the search in google and enter it manually. Even when i do connect to a site, down the bottom of my browser it says something like "web-analytics.google.com......".
Now i've done full scans with AVG and Ad-Aware, and that has removed 90% of the shit that was on here, but i still cant get google to work.
As i said, i know alot of these posts crop up in here, but any reply would be much appreciated.
P.S. One other thing, i can't access my GMail account. It loads, but never displays my inbox/messages, it just loads the Gmail symbol and some links at the top, thats it.
Urghh, someone please tell me what i can do, its driving me insane.

First thing I would do is verify this is happening with multiple browsers to confirm it's a real spyware program and not just a browser specific plugin. Once you've verified it's occurring on all your browsers or just one browser, go into your task manager and see what programs (processes) are running before you start the browser and what programs are running after the browser is launched. If they remain the same, verify all processes running are known to you.
Write down the suspicious processes and do a search to see if they're normal or associated with spyware. Locate the program directory and terminate it manually through deletion and/or registry manipulation. I'm sure someone else has dealt with this, so once you know the program name you'll have a better idea what to do.
Do a search for the program The Ultimate Troubleshooter if you have WinXP. This program will find every process that's running whether active or not and cannot terminate anything you don't need. You'd be surprised at what processes/services are completely unnecessary. I hope that helps.
