Let's be honest here, AVG 8 is shit.  Unless they've released a fix in the last little while that I haven't heard of, I uninstalled that POS memory hog almost the same hour I installed it.
How they could screw it up like that is beyond me.

Anyway, I've been trying to find the best answer to this, and it's come down to:

-Avast (not bad)
-AVG 7.5    (you can still find it, and it still updates)

I'm not sure if 7.5 finds some of the new stuff out there.  I gotta look into that.  Can anyone with experience chime in?

I haven't installed 8 so I'm not really sure exactly what you are talking about.

I did install it on some computers at the office, and they seem to be doing ok with it. They are 2.(1-5) GHZ I can't remember exactly with 2 GB of ram with windows XP. If you are using Vista that may be your problem I recently uninstalled vista for XP, and my pc runs 10 times better already.

Avast is good I just think that AVG does a better job of catching things better. ALL anti virus software(good at least) is going to use the shit out of your system resources...Thats just the way it is.

Take McAfee...It used so much I had to remove it from my pc.

I guess its just what works best with your computer.

avira is a pretty good one, i used it for a while and liked it.  the big popup when it updates is annoying but im pretty sure it has good detection rates.

peace

No, I was running XP also.  I avoid Vista like the plague.

Really?  You've tested all of them? I think that's totaly wrong.  AVG 8, Norton, McAfee, THOSE maybe...since they're junk.  A good AV program will use minimal resources while still being very effective, and only during a full scan might it actualy slow things down (on modern PC's that is).

AVG 7.5 is ok, and Nod32 is even better, both without bloat.

i can't say enough good stuff about nod32.  i've used a few antivirus and nod32 was the best at detecting real threats w/o giving false positives and was considerably minimal on my resources.

Well no I haven't tried them all, but the majority aside from AVG 7 has used TOOOO many system resources.

Avast I'm not very familiar with, but it sounds like it may not use them. I guess I just found AVG, and have liked it so I'm not switching until they quit supporting 7.

I use AVG8 and it doesn't slow down the computer at all.  The only time it effects the computer at all is when its doing a full scan in the background.  I don't know what a good recourse usage level is but cumulatively all of AVG's processes are using around 55,300 K for me.

Funny thing is that my dad was running McAfee and not only would it slow down the computer for no apparent reason but it didn't catch anything.  As soon as his subscription was up I installed AVG and it found like 8 infections and 2 spyware.  Then I set up a weekly full scan schedule and nothing has been found since.  I run AVG in tandem with Spybot S&D too so I'm sure that helps with the spyware.

Spybot S&D is awesome though cause it notifies you of any registry changes and allows you to approve or deny them.  I'm sure that helps prevent infectious programs from getting into your registry.

My recommendation would be AVG7^ along side Spybot S&D.  Apart they are both great programs, but together they prevent your computer from DLing bad shit as well as preventing anything already on your system from spreading.

AVG - safe search is awesome.
Spybot S&D

I feel like a shameless advertiser.

As far as other free programs I don't know much about them.

Yeah TeaTimer (from S+D) is really good. Have it running also.

AVG 7.5 is using less than 10mb at the moment btw.  Of course, 8 might be safer.  I'm not sure, haven't looked into it that far.  Personaly, I really don't like the new interface (whatever coding it's based off of), and I don't like the fact that it's eating 50mb+ of ram.

Yea, I personally didn't run a virus program for over 1 year, and when I did it only found maybe 1-2 Trojans...Which with my firewall they wouldn't have much luck. Also, if you tell your firewall not to let outgoing traffic on certain ports, and from certain programs then your computer is basically locked down.

I guess the worst that could happen would be to lose data, but nobody would ever get shit from you.

I guess its how safe you are. The most dangerous shit to me is the Adware...Huge pain in the ass.
