What's a good program for this, one that I could find in a torrent somewhere.
(I have too many threads in here right now  )

Aside from the GIMP, open source also offers mplayer/mencoder for transforming videos to GIF.

That's what I use - that or imagemagick.
Command-line interface ftw!

convert *.jpg output.gif
But yeah, if you want something with an interface, use the GIMP or Photoshop.

how great, i was just about to ask how to do this with gimp,
sherm recommends gimp.
i dont want to turn video to gif, ijust want to make one from scratch

I downloaded gimp, but I can't figure out how to use it for what I want to do. I have to read up on it more I guess, I usually download stuff and figure it out myself as I go along, but gimp looks like I'd have to put more effort in
I'm not trying to make video into gif either, I'm making one from scratch also, sort of. More like greamlins, etc

Microsoft gif animator is the simplest one I know of. If you google you can find it easy
