CERN's LHC causes 16-yo girl to commit suicide
    #8915662 - 09/11/08 10:37 PM (2 months, 21 days ago)

So....it ended up killing someone after all

http://gizmodo.com/5048646/girl-commits-suicide-over-lhc-doomsday-predictions

Despite repeated assurances by experts that the Large Hadron Collider would not bring about the end of the world, it appears that one 16-year-old girl in central India decided to commit suicide by drinking pesticide rather than face that remote possibility. Her father noted that several Indian programs aired doomsday predictions in the days leading up to the test run, which left her inconsolable. As tragic as this is, I can't help but wonder why someone would rather go out by drinking pesticide than being painlessly vaporized.

Daaaayyyyum.....
Maybe a micro black hole manifested in her mind and made her thoughts unstable and her emotions incoherent....
She was obviously targeted, and there will be more, mark my words.....    There.....will.....be....more.........:tinfoil:

Probably more a function of media hysteria than the actual scientific apparatus.  Of course nothing really caused her to do it, she chose to do it.

A teenage girl in India has reportedly killed herself out of fear the world was about to end because of the atom-smashing "Big Bang" experiment" conducted in Europe.

The 16-year old girl, from the state of Madhya Pradesh, died after drinking pesticide, The Daily Mail said.

Her father, identified on local television as Biharilal, said his daughter, Chayya, had killed herself after watching doomsday predictions about the Large Hadron Collider on Indian news programmes.

"In the past two days, Chayya had asked me and other relatives about the world coming to an end on September 10," Biharilal said.

"We tried to divert her attention and told her she should not worry about such things, but to no avail."

WTF? You shouldn't say "do not worry about such things", you should say "nothing will happen". Lame parents.

Also, how is drinking pesticide better than being sucked into a black hole?

i think it would be pretty cool to get sucked into a black hole

they say if you got sucked into a black hole and people were on the outside watching they would be able to see you forever because after a certain point no light escapes and you would only see what was stuck at the last point where light was able to escape.

But if the light escapes it wouldn't be there any more?

i think it's the light that is trapped right on the edge to where it almost gets out but it doesnt, so we would be able to see it

Hmm... but if we can see it, the light is escaping and thus being depleted. Or maybe only a little bit of light is escaping slowly?:psychsplit:

I believe the point is that as you approach the event horizon the acceleration is so great that it is as if the light source (person falling into the hole) is approaching the speed of light.  Space is actually moving into itself towards the black hole, so the light may be moving very slow from your perspective, ignoring the black hole, though it will still be moving at the speed of light from the perspective of the person that emitted/reflected it out to you.

So the light source is moving faster and faster away from you, and thus the wavelength of the light you receive increases, like the doplar effect with sound.

While the person still reflects light of the same wavelength from his perspective, the light would take an infintiely long time to get to the observer as the person falling into the black hole approaches the speed of light.

At the moment when the person is moving at the speed of light relative to you the light cannot make any progress to reach you, and so everything prior to that point, before when the guy was moving at the speed of light, will be all that can reach you.

So you'd see everything slowed down infinitely slow in the moments prior to when he reaches the event horizon... though I believe in practice the light would approach infinite dimness and infinite wavelengths so you couldn't get any meaningful information to construct a picture with.

I don't know if the above is true, just based on what I've heard and my understanding of light and gravity.

That last bit makes it all seem more plausible. Otherwise we could look at a black hole and see everything that ever fell into it. Including stars.

Cant say for sure (of course).  But I imagine death by black hole might be quite painful as you would probably die from the tidal forces, which would be like dieing on the old medieval rack.

i think dying in a black hole would be the most painless death ever, because you would move at the speed of light to the center of the hole where you would be crushed/vaporized by the gravitational pull, so the whole process would take way less than a fraction of a second.

(my 50th post! yay!)

Nah, you wouldnt be moving at the speed of light.  The tidal forces would kill you first.  What that means is.. if you jumped in head first, the gravity your head feels would be much stronger than the gravity your feet feels.  This difference in forces would pull your body apart like the rack I mentioned.  I dont know how long it would take though, maybe it would be real quick.

Time dilation is relative, so the person would experience his own time moving perfectly normally as he gets killed.

I believe though that his head, if head first, would be ageing slower than the rest of his body.
