Laetiporus cultivation
    #8896401 - 09/08/08 01:37 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

I have not been able to find much info on the internet or on this message board about cultivation of Laetiporus. I know Fungi Perfecti sells dowel spawn for inoculating stumps. Reading Stamets books, he mentions cultivating Laetiporus only briefly in passing.
From what I gather (which is very little), the Chicken of the Woods is best suited for colonizing stumps, not logs, and sawdust block fruiting seems to be unheard of.

I only ask because I found this lovely orange specimen:

So is cloning this a waste of time if fruiting is only possible from stumps?

I've tried a few times on blocks with no success to date.  Its worth a try but it seems that success is elusive.  Cloning and growing the mycelium is easy.

How about burying inoculated logs?  And sending me a tissue culture from that beauty?

I inoculated 15 3-section petri dishes with samples, even with really bad odds I should have a few to spare.

I'd love to get a culture from you- we can talk trade via pm if you're interested.

C of the Woods is a wonderful mushroom!  Unfortunately, it isn't abundant at all where I live.  For me, it's practically a delicacy.  Nice find.

Just a quick update - I just did a cursory check on my dishes (I keep them wrapped up tight to prevent contamination) and it looks like I have some good growth on several of the dishes - though quite a few have dissolved into bacterial goo as well.

What's the best way to send tissue cultures through the mail? And how does one send a private message on this BB? (Sorrry, but I am a NOOB)

The way to send cultures is up to preference really and depends of where you're sending them. Sending wedges in ziplock bags, wedges or LC in vacutainer or vials and whole petri dishes are all acceptable methods to use.

To send a PM, click the username you want to send to, then down the bottom of the page click the link "send a private message".

If you want to go "low tek" and you're using peroxide in your agar and the mycelium has adapted to it, you can use peroxide soaked cardboard which requires less cleanup.

Otherwise go with the wedge or dish in a bag thing.

Cultured mycelium from this specimen. Powdery and orangish.

Probably best not to work with that in front of a flow hood!

The mycelium looks exactly as it should for this species.  Good work!

Make some slants, quick!
As soon as you have a clean strain, preserve it please.
If you dont want to bother, I'd gladly do it for you and send it back to you when you need it again :-)
Considering how much interest this one generated so far, I think it would be a shame to lose this.

So does the mycelium taste like a creamsicle?  Artificial orange flavor with a dash of yummy wood based imitation vanilla?  That's the color!!

Just out of curiousity, did you eat any of the mushroom you took the culture from?  How does the conifer munching species compare to the standard variety?

It tastes like chicken!

First time I've ever seen one. Don't know if there is a taste difference between varieties.

Interesting looking mycelium. What are you planning on spawning it to?

Chicken?!  People only say that because chicken doesn't taste like chicken anymore.  Go out and get yourself a pasture raised chicken that's had a full life of scratching up dirt and eating bugs and grasses and stuff.  That tastes like chicken!  (I do this thing where I butterfly the chicken and brine it and roast it for 30-45 minutes at 475F.  It works, and it's delicious!)

Okay, um.  No issues with it growing on conifers?  There are a couple of poorly positioned and ugly looking pine trees near my home, and I'm thinking about... nah.  Bad karma.

I'll have to let you know how it goes with the pine litter sawdust spawn.
