What McKenna book should I get first?
    #8890307 - 09/07/08 10:19 AM (2 months, 26 days ago)

I want to start reading more. Do you think Food of the Gods would be a good one to start with? I have been wanting to get it for awhile now, I think I might today. Any thoughts experienced reading people? :awesome:

All of Mckenna's books are equally good in their own unique way. Food of the Gods sounds like a good start, then perhaps True Hallucinations.

reading is good
read lots, learn what you can in the most well rounded way.
i am not too sure about mckenna being worth all the attention.
the 2012 thing makes me doubt it immensely.
there are so many other excellent writers
still
mckenna sure has a lot of people who think he was smart.
that in itself is a clever trick.

there sure are a lot of tricky things in this world

I haven't read any of his other work, but True Hallucinations has some spicy accounts of McKenna smoking DMT and then proceeding into a passionate lovefest with a girl who's intoxicated out of her mind on Datura.

Well I don't agree with the 2012 idea either really. That still doesn't make me think that he was not one of the most intelligent thinkers of our time. He was such a powerful speaker. He can go on and on about whatever, and weave his words together so smoothly. He was brilliant. I had two weeks in a row with the renowned PE and let me say that I can not thank that man enough for what he has done. I had no idea how he brought that strain about. It is breathtaking to say the least. I have never had such a profound experience as I did with these. I totally underestimated 4 grams on the first ride. Wow I was amazed at how fast they came on. Oh and it increased sounds like I have never heard before, this washer was whining and I thought it was like screaming/dying. Freaky. Not to mention visuals that last for hours on end. :psychsplit: Anyways I went ahead and ordered Food of the Gods. I have been wanting to read it for awhile now. I used to love read, I hope this book sparks me again. I don't know why I ever stopped reading, I guess I was just lost in different things. How can someone quit reading though? I mean that is just wrong. I have to get more books. :bigblunt:

He didn't make any claim, so what are you getting worked up over?

He doesn't have to prove anything to you just because he doesn't care for your speaker.

McKenna was an intriguing poet, orator, storyteller, and artist of prose.  But as to the actual substance of his ideas, it's pretty patchy.  He has to be taken with a whole lotta grains of salt; maybe a whole shakerfull.

Between the brothers, I find Dennis much more interesting, because he was concerned with the soundness of his ideas, not just how aesthetically pleasing they were.  To each their own though; different strokes for different folks.

Much to my chagrin, Invisible Landscape has been kind of a bust for me.  Too much pseudo-science for me.  Quite the opposite of Food of the Gods.  I found that to be phenomenal.  The anthropological theories and interpretation of mysticism is a lot more applicable to his line of reasoning. Plus the perspective on history is just amazing.

Still haven't checked out True Hallucinations.  If it is just personal accounts, I think it should be a good read.

I believe terrance to be one of the most intelligent people I have heard speak.

Although also one of the most delusional.

Terence McKenna was incredibly intelligent. Some of his theories were pretty far out there, but nonetheless he truly was a brilliant man especially for someone who smokes pot everyday and all day. :bigblunt:

Shortly before he died, Mckenna said I will see you all behind closed eyelids, so maybe.
