Alligators Kept by Rio Drug Lords Dined on the Dead

Alligators kept in the home of a suspected Brazilian drug lord were used to terrorize neighbors and dispose of murder victims, Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper said.
The alligators, measuring 80 and 40 centimeters (32 and 16 inches) long, were discovered by Rio de Janeiro police, along with a machine gun, cocaine and three grenades, in the slum house of a man identified only by his nickname, ``Spider,'' Folha reported, citing authorities.
Police struggled for 20 minutes to bring one of the reptiles under control after it escaped by jumping from the back of a police truck, Folha said. Police nicknamed the animals Celso and Maia, after the two officers who led the sting operation.
Police chief Ronaldo de Oliveira told Folha that other drug gangs have allegedly kept alligators to terrorize their victims and local residents. However, this was the first time police in Rio had actually found any of the animals, he said.

The whole thing sounds like an absurd exageration.
A 32" alligator (even a small herd of them) would be incapable of consuming a normal sized human before serious and extensive decomposition set in. After that, no self-respecting alligator would inclined to eat a stinky bloated corpse, given a choice, and the pervasive smell would not serve the drug lord too well, either.
I'm not particularly brave, but I wouldn't be very intimidated by a 32 incher, and if threatened, I bet it would rather escape. A 16 incher could probably be stomped by a person in less than 1 second.
A Doberman or two would be MUCH more effective at intimidation, and a helluva lot easier to transport, maintain, feed, etc., etc. This story doesn't make much logical sense, but then, neither does the world at large, sometimes.

Alligators will store food on the bottom of river beds letting it decompose sometimes before consuming it.
Edit- but I agree, alligators that size wouldn't intimidate... well, anyone except a child maybe.

Did you look at the picture of the little squeaker in the original article??? I've seen bigger "gators" in a fish tank! Looks like it would choke on a goldfish! That one ain't storing anything at the bottom of a river!
The story (like most anti-drug articles) is filled with inflammatory, exagerated claims primarily designed to sell newpapers, and no pains appear to have been taken to assure accuracy in the reporting.

Yeah, that 16 incher is just a baby. Ah, he's cute. Even if a body was cut into bite sized pieces, it would take a friggin year for that thing to finish him off.

i agree, that at those sizes that it would be pointless. But give it some time, and a good diet of some delicious drug scum that wound up on the wrong side of a gun, and im sure they will get bigger and be more up to the challenge, a la indiana jones, you know temple of doom style man eating.
i feel though that it is a rather effective way to dispose of bodies i guess, if you could handle on large enough to do so.
