Buying a new LCD monitor

I'm considering buying a 22" monitor and getting a TV tuner card. The idea is that I'm going to ditch my TV and just use the larger monitor (currently have a 17" at 1280x1024). Everyone in my building uses DirectTV, do you think there will be any issues?
If you were buying a new monitor, what would you pay attention to the most as far as specs go?
Right now I'm paying biggest attention to three factors: 1. Response time 2. Contrast ratio 3. Brightness
What else should I consider when purchasing a new monitor? I don't play many games, but will be using the monitor for TV and image editing. Do you have a particular monitor you recommend?
Here's the one I've been considering: http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VX2240w-22-inch-Digital-Widescreen/dp/tech-data/B000XJLQWE/ref=de_a_smtd

The viewsonics are held in extremely high regard. I'm about to make the same upgrade as you, methinks, and that's one I've been looking at. This is an invaluable resource: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=7&g=74

This may be a dumb comment/question, but I've noticed some LCD's seem to have (what appears to be) a glass or "glossy" cover, while others do not. e.g. the new imac looks spectacular.
This may make a difference. Personally, I'd go for the glossy type.

They have higher contrast but suffer from glare.

Yeah, I have white walls and a southwest facing window. A glossy screen would be pretty much unviewable in the afternoon.

Personally I recommend Samsung for their high quality and 0 dead pixel policy. Viewsonic ain't what it used to be. Something like this would probably work well for you and you could skip the tuner card.

Well, you're gonna need to run it in native resolution, so make sure your PC/video card can handle that well. Since you play a limited amount of games, that shouldn't be a problem I don't think.
I don't know how well PC's display TV content vs actual LCD TVs. I wonder if pixelation would be worse at those high resolutions? No idea. Might wanna check into that. What would really bug me is not having the ability to plop on the couch, turn off the lights and watch a good movie. If you gotta gf, I'm sure she'd appreciate that more too.

I plan on putting a couch right behind my computer desk... it's really my only option with the limited amount of space I have in my apartment. And because the place is so small, I wouldn't be sitting very far away so a 22" screen should do the trick. The only issue would be that the monitor is up higher than the couch. I guess I could move it to the coffee table on movie nights.
Suess: that monitor looks perfect. Except that it's about $200 more than I was looking to spend. But it does have a ton of inputs that other monitors don't have. If only they made one without speakers with a lower price... I'd be sold.

The Samsung monitors are really nice. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 226bw. 22" widescreen. Beatiful display. I love it. I think that particular model is out of production but they certainly have someting similar that replaced it and I love mine.

Definitely get a samsung. Ive had other monitors and there is no comparison. Also if you are going to be using it to watch tv, i would recommend a tv that is 22+ inchs and HD. I think 32" is perfect, for a monitor and tv.
Things to look for:
Contrast ms speed (for gamers) ( for tv watching, be noticeable for fast moving objects) refresh rate (higher the better for your eyes) max resolution max colors reviews rebates/bundles (check out newegg)

Yeah Samsung are probably the best of all. But a given model will have different levels of quality because they can use panels from different manufacturers and not change the model number. The only way to tell is open the box and look at the serial written on the monitor - if the last letter ends with an A it's a BENQ panel, C is Chimei, and S is Samsung, the best quality.
I know all this from that Whirlpool forum link I posted above. I'm not sure how big the difference is, and whether they continue this practice. But they did for the 222bw.

I have this same monitor and it is great. Personally, i would only buy either samsung or NEC brand monitors. When i used to work at officemax, we would get all three brands in stock. I always seemed to like the samsungs more...
Anything under 4ms response time is more than enough, you probably would not be able to tell the difference between 2ms and 4ms...I think your looking at the right specs IMO. Also, you could mount the monitor somewhere, on a rotating arm, that would make it much easier to view from different angles regularly, something like this

Anyone have experience with BenQ's products?
I found this 24" Monitor/TV made by them and am considering buying it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014177

I've got a BenQ laptop and I love it. It's incredibly well built. They are only available in Australia and Asia. Not sure of their display line as it's quite a separate business. Earlier in the thread I said some Samsung displays are made with non-Samsung panels which aren't as good, and one of those manufacturers is BenQ. I think BenQ is probably good for the price, but not as good as Samsung.

I've got a Samsung 226BW. I'm really, really happy with it. It's got a sharp image, nice backlight and a solid warranty.
My one complaint is the blue light on the bottom right-hand of the screen when the monitor is on. Once you notice it, it can get annoying if you're in an otherwise pitch-black room.
