The first pins I had aborted for some reason and them I had to make some room for newer projects that were over-incubating.
I've already started some new jars of spawn and this time I plan on spawning to coir/woodchips instead of plain coir.
I think the first grow aborted because of the small amount of spawn I used.
Alan has been sent a pore sample for ID. Once he gives me spore sizes and descriptions I'll look over the known Puerto Rican Ganoderma species and figure out which it really is.

Oh that's a pity, I was enjoying following this log. Staight coir for Ganoderma lucidum isn't a good substrate choice in my experience. The mycelium tore through it, but after a week or so of fruiting, 95% of the fruits spontaneously stopped growing. I don't think there are enough nutrients to support reishi in straight coir.
Good luck on your next attempt and I look forward to hearing the ID report.

Why not trying a mix with sawdust and a little nitrogen supplement (bran or something of the like). It would be probably do much better in supporting the fruitings through harvest. The coir would probably promote fast colonization with the wood to give the essentials for fruiting. Adding in a few wood chips wouldn't hurt either- help to stabilize larger fruits.

I'll try sawdust once I get ahold of some.
I've got a bag of alder chips finally. Now I just need some sawdust and another bucket of zodoo for other projects.
Lipa has a plate of the specimen. I'm hoping he gets it to fruit at some point.

Small update:
Alan measured the spores of this sample for me.
The spore size are 8 - 11 by 5 - 7 micrometers and they are avocado shaped spores.

I just stuck this on agar last night so we will see how it goes. I will try to make up a couple of bags for comparison. Different substrates of course.
