Tripsis. I was just going through my records and I actually did put some bran in those logs of reishi. I put 5 cups of leftover bran in the wheel barrow when I was done soaking the coir. It was the last of what I had and wasn't much but I threw it in. Wanted to let you know so you weren't misinformed. My bad!

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I've already bought 3 bags of bran for my next grow, but I'm going to have to hold off spawning until I move house. I guess I'll just have to shake the hell out of those grain jars of reishi so that they don't over-incubate again.
Just a question, do you know whether willow wood would be any good for reishi?

I do believe willow is a go. Stamets list the them as an acceptable substrate in the GGMM. As far as for reishi I don't know that for a fact. Maybe Roger might have something to add about it. I am a newbie when it comes to reishi so I haven't experimented with anything other than alder, oak and cherry.

Supplemented oak is also a go for Reishi. Willow is a great substrate for oysters. I find 90% or more of the wild specimens around here on it. I'm sure it'll work just fine for reishi also, but it might be quick in decomposition, resulting in block shrinkage rather quickly. This might not be a problem, but I thought I'd mention it.

Read my above posts. It's all over. My camera broke so I couldn't get any photos and by the time I got a new one had to toss it as the house I'm renting is being sold and inspections have begun.

I'll be doing another one soon, but on a better and supplemented substrate. I wasn't too happy with the way this one turned out.

Are you sure it was the coir only? What about other variables?
I'm all for using mixed-ingredients substrates, but I'd like to know where you think it went wrong.

Yeah, it could have been anything, but the straight coir seemed to do it from my viewpoint. There was sufficient moisture, high enough temperature and enough FAE that conks were forming.
One variable that might have done it was very high RH. I'm not sure if that would have an effect of growth, but I have read that polypores prefer a lower humidity than gilled mushrooms. Being in a monotub, humidity got quite high, but also over the course of a day with a fan running every half an hour for 15 minutes, that humidity completely dissipated. To such a degree in fact that I would have to mist it to get it back up.
