Survey: Boomers doped up in old age

Survey: Boomers doped up in old age
September 5, 2008 - Oxford Press

Study finds illicit drug use among Americans 55-59 years of age is up by 116 percent in the past five years.

WASHINGTON — The generation that once celebrated sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll as a rite of passage is carrying substance abuse into retirement, says a U.S. government survey released Thursday, Sept. 4.

Illicit drug use shot up 116 percent during the past five years for Americans between the ages of 55 and 59, according to a 2007 study by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

In that age group, 4.1 percent of those queried said they had used illicit drugs within the previous month, up from 1.9 percent in 2002.

Similarly, 5.7 percent of those between the ages of 50 and 54 reported using illicit drugs, up from 3.4 percent in 2002, a 68 percent increase.

"This is the baby boomer generation," said John Walters, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Millions of boomers who developed a dependency on marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens or other drugs as teenagers, he said, are now living with the disease of substance addiction.

"We are carrying the illness into the age group for the rest of our lives," he said.

Throughout much of the 1960s, use of alcohol and illicit drugs was regarded as an accepted — if illegal — expression of youthful rebellion, said Walter.

"Everybody looked the other way," he said, instead of spotting red flags for substance abuse.

"It was so accepted — the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll — and it's caught up with a lot of us — if we're still alive," said Candy Finnigan, 61, who works to help people kick substance abuse problems and has appeared in the A&E network's docudrama "Intervention."

Despite the development of clinics that specialize in helping older addicts recover, substance abusers often find themselves without the support of close family and friends that is available to teen abusers, according to Finnigan.

That's one reason why millions go untreated.

A total of 23.2 million Americans people needed treatment last year for drug or alcohol abuse, and only 2.4 million got it, said SAMHSA's acting administrator, Eric Broderick.

Of the remaining 20.8 million who needed treatment and didn't get it, 94 percent said they did not feel they needed help, according to Broderick.

Well, as a member of that group (early 50's) I gotta say, they got it all wrong.  It's just that the time is right again!

Kids gone, money in hand, private, secure home to do it in, and the time and inclination to have a spiritual practice or just a step outside of the ordinary.

Not an addition...more like an affectation or hobby!  Doing it because we can, we want to...not because we NEED to!

What a laughable piece of anti-drug propaganda!!

I wonder how many of those were for prescription pills/alcohol?

I bet more for it than there were for cocaine/heroin.

come on now, half of those types of drugs arent even addictive
and the others (cocaine, heroin) are probably used to dull their extreme pains they might have

and why the fuck does the government care if old people are doing drugs. its not like there going to have a party, get all fucked up, and try driving home.  they wouldnt even make it out the door before they fall asleep
old people cant do any harm while on drugs, not to sound like a jackass but they're going to die soon so why not let them have there fun

I highly doubt that these people have been addicted since teenage years. No 60 year old man will be using cocaine for 40 years and be alive...

Not to mention you won't find any geezers snorting brown. WTF.

They probably ONLY smoke weed, despite what it says.

We need to get these people off of drugs and get them some legal rXes to numb their woes.
