So I guess it's wrong to carry around $2k of cash on you? You're automatically a drug dealer?

Middleton cocaine bust nets $14g in drugs, cash, alcohol

MIDDLETON — Police seized approximately one and a half ounces of cocaine during a traffic stop Saturday night.

Officers estimated the quantity has a street-sale value between $10,000 and $12,000.

"It's the largest cocaine seizure we have had by the Middleton Police Department," Chief Randy Sobel said Monday.

Anthony Cook, 18, of 6B Jackson St., Rochester, was a passenger in the rear of the vehicle, and was arrested and charged with a Class A felony of possession of a controlled drug.

The cocaine was hidden in a sock.

Police also seized over $1,800 in cash, a digital scale, alcohol, a corncob pipe and a camera, Officer Tim Brown said.

The incident began when police stopped a Toyota pickup truck driven by Johnathan C. Bardsley, 18, of 321 Wakefield Road, Wakefield, on Route 153 near the Union line around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Sobel said the stop was for a yellow line violation and Middleton was assisted by Wakefield and Milton police.

Bardsley was charged with a Class A misdemeanor of operating after suspension and a violation of transporting alcohol. He was released on personal recognizance, Brown added.

A passenger in the front was not charged, Sobel said.

Following the arrest, officers from Middleton worked with Rochester Police to execute a search of Cook's Jackson Street residence. That search resulted in the seizure of a small amount of marijuana and additional evidence to the possession of cocaine crime, Brown explained.

On Monday, Middleton Police, along with a K-9 unit from the State Police, went to Wakefield to search an impounded vehicle registered in Cook's name, which yielded more evidence. Brown declined to provide further information as to what was discovered in that vehicle.

"It's a good end result of a cooperative effort among multiple agencies," Brown said.

Sobel agreed.

"It's good to get this off the streets," he said.

Cook was video arraigned in Rochester District Court Monday morning, and ordered held on $10,000 cash bail by Judge Daniel Cappiello, at the request of Assistant County Attorney Thomas Miscio.

Miscio also requested there be a source hearing if Cook posts bail. A source hearing ensures the money posted was obtained by legitimate means. Miscio also asked that Cook be required to sign a waiver of extradition before his release, and that he not possess any weapons, drink alcohol or use any illegal drugs.

Cappiello ordered all requests, despite Cook's request for high personal recognizance bail with electronic supervision.

No plea was entered, as District Court does not hold jurisdiction to try felonies. A probable cause hearing on the matter is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 8 a.m. in District Court.

Brown said the case is still under investigation. He noted Cook was out on bail for charges of burglary and receiving stolen property out of Rockingham County. Police had notified the Rockingham County Attorney's office regarding the arrest.
