My unusual Japanese/Shinto/Buddhist art discovery
    #8866702 - 09/02/08 03:57 PM (3 months, 17 hours ago)

I went along with a friend on a construction job to perform a cleanout of all the abandoned contents of the building into dumpsters.
Along the way i came across this unusual looking piece of Japanese artwork adhered to a half sawn round of wood with serialized halves and corked endcaps. It is approx 3-3/4" dia X 12-1/4" tall..Its old, as well a rather pleasing piece of work on the eyes. Im curious if perahps someone can put a story to this particualar character/setting/motif and perhaps even tell us what the writing on the clothing signifies.
Enjoy/thanks

No,that swastika is actually a sanskrit character. The nazis just used it as there own.It actually out dates the nazi germany by a few thousand years.

That's true but do you have proof that that symbol came to Japan prior to the 20th century and their involvement with the Axis powers?

It's a mirror image of the german swastika; if it were of german or greek origin, it would be right-handed (like the one depicted above by thedudenj).  It seems unlikely that japanese axis powers would use a reversed nazi swatika.

actually the nazi one goes the same way as the hindu one, but is tilted. when it came to Buddhists they didnt mind which way it faced tho some consdered one way to be a bit evil. i read up on it right quick, so if it actaully was a nazi one it was facing the wrong way and i think nazis were way to upthight let it go a differnt dircetion then the rest so, it probally is Buddhist or something like that
