Mycology Degree

First of all, I am not exactly sure as to where this post would be best suited, so (to any moderator) feel free to move this post at your discretion.
I am a first-year college student currently pursuing a double major in psychology and biology (with an ecological emphasis), and a minor in chemistry. This may seem like a lot for a freshman to have planned, but I am technically a sophomore as I already have over two semesters worth of credit from AP courses taken in high school.
I am enamored by psychology, biology, and chemistry; however, I find myself most interested in mycology. There are, I'm sure, many colleges that offer degrees in mycology, but my university does not. I have plans to take the one mycology course that they do offer, but would really like to learn much more about the science from a learned instructor rather than primarily from independent study.
To all of you mycologists and those hopeful to be, what should my first course of action be? I definitely plan on continuing as scheduled throughout this semester and the next, but what would you recommend I do next? In which courses should I begin to enroll? What colleges offer programs in mycology?
I'm especially interested in input from mycologists such as Alan Rockefeller or RogerRabbit, but any advice would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I think the place to start specializing would be grad school. Take the undergrad class and concentrate on your regular biology, and then make sure you apply to grad schools that are doing the kind of research you want to do.

He is himself his own World, his own Universe; of any other than himself he can form no conception; he knows not Length, nor Breadth, nor Height, for he has had no experience of them; he has no cognizance even of the number Two; nor has he a thought of Plurality; for he is himself his One and All, being really Nothing. Yet mark his perfect self-contentment, and hence learn his lesson, that to be self-contented is to be vile and ignorant, and that to aspire is better than to be blindly and impotently happy.

Penn State has one of the best programs in the country. Another option is UW-La Crosse. Tom Volk is a professor of mycology there. You might want to contact him via his website for more info on enrollment. RR

I was wondering. A number of people in the "advance mycology" forum seem really interested in genetics and creating their own strain of shrooms. If they don't have the time to go back to get a degree in mycology, could someone recommend a book that can teach them about mushroom genetics and how they can make or manipulate their own mushroom strains?

I really think one would need a rather nice lab to attempt it.

These books don't really cover strain development but two good ones I have on cultivation and advanced myc that I swear by are
Mushroom Cultivation - Peter Oei and Mycorrhizal Symbiosis - S.E. Smith and D.J. Read

Hey b3jamboree,
I'm curious why the myco book? Mycorrhizas are lower fungals. When cultivating them you plant an AM (if your cultivating AM) infected symbiont host plant into (for example) a vermiculite based media and harvest the hyphae, spores, roots of host (for arbuscules and high concentration of hyphae and spores in rhizophere), etc.
Is there a synergistic relationship between AM and higher fungals?
Thanks

Ya mean the purple hair? I think there's something about mycology that makes us all a bit weird. He's cool though. Definitely knows his stuff.
I'm glad he survived his heart transplant. I last saw him just before he got the new heart, and quite frankly, I didn't think he'd make it. RR

So, anyone knows a book that goes a bit into mushroom genetics and methodology of making crosses?

I found this book listed on Amazon.com Genetics and Breeding of Edible Mushrooms by A.C. Chang
In chapters 7, 8, and 9 listed in the table of contents appears to talk about breeding hybrids. They also discuss the topic of inter generic hybrids. It sounds like they're covering exactly what we're discussing. However, they're asking $120 for the book with out showing the contents. It sounds like something I'd buy, but I'll check to see what Amazon's return policy is in case it's something that is filled with a lot of theory with out any practical applications.
I just checked the data base of the main library in my area along with the local community college. It's not listed at all, even at any of its subsidiary branches. If I really want to read it I guess I have to buy it.

I had the opportunity to attend a couple of lectures by Mr Chang in 2005. He's pretty knowledgeable. He's also a fairly regular contributor to the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, but if you don't like the price of his book, you'll really hate the $500+ per year subscription price of the journal. I cringe every year at renewal time. RR

Yep, he survived and felt quite well when I saw him. Also grateful and gracious. His sense of humor is a little on the dry side with keen innuendo. It’s not often you see a Prof. with Technicolor hair, outside of art circles.
