Pestilence
Pestilence were one of those classic bands that took the old idea, maybe Destruction or Slayer, and threw it pell-mell into the new idea, say Possessed or Sepultura, and made something great out of it. Starting as a death metal band known for its crushing songs, they moved on to become one of the founders of the technical death metal movement. Now you can see complete reviews of each of their works with mp3 samples.

"Melodic" just describes the music. "Melodic death metal" is used by many people to refer to heavy metal bands with death vocals.
"Technical" is also a descriptive term.
Most of the early technical death metal was melodic, e.g. Atheist, At the Gates, Pestilence, Gorguts, Obliveon, u.s.w.

What's a good description of technical death metal then?
I was under the impression that technical death metal favored blistering guitar skill and formidable time signatures over melody.

At least in the way we used it 1992-1996 or so, it meant music that was technical. It's not a genre, just a description. As far as technical death metal, it goes through trends: jazz, Meshuggah (as you mentioned), etc.
