The best philosophy...
    #8850260 - 08/29/08 10:56 PM (3 months, 4 days ago)

...is to never do anything in life that you'd be ashamed to tell your mother about.

Discuss.

To be perfectly honest... I'm willing to tell my mother about all the worst shit I've done in my life, and I pretty much have.

Does this make me Philosophos Incarnate, almighty Logos Itself?

My mom doesn't need to know a fraction of the shit that I have done. So I'm going to disagree. I don't feel the need to live up to my mom's morals and standards, she ridicules me enough.

I don't mean ashamed in the sense that you think your mom would disapprove based on her old-fashioned morals or standards--I mean it in more of the sense that you personally wouldn't feel ashamed of coming clean to her, regardless of what she would say in return.

I disagree.
It puts way too much emphasis on another person for me too agree with.
I am fairly egotistical in the form of me thinking I know better (know better than, not am better, there is a difference) than some people. I should know better, considering what I know is that I don't know anything.
Doesn't really fit with my personality type.

I believe I could be mis-interpreting your idea though, I will think about it.

Edit: So are you saying to live your life how you would, but be able to tell your mother even if she wouldn't approve?

Exactly... live your life so that you feel morally comfortable enough telling your mother what've you done, even if she disapproves.

I don't know my mother, does that mean that I can do anything?

I think there has to be a balance point between inexposure and exposure toward parents. Because they have much older software they would be very shocked to have some of the existential understandings revealed to them that today's youth encounter.

Although the hiding of information is simply indulgence in the old ways- those are the ways the parents are used to indulging in.

There can be sympathy in spite of understanding, it is very human to choose what you feel is easy. To expose those around you to your understandings is to potentially make them a knowing part of yourself. One which might be painful to be.

I suppose all will be seen in time, it's just a question of how fast to show.

My mothers deader than a doornail. So I feel free to express anything to a dead person. So I'm good to go.

Shame is the result of inner conflict and guilt and it is an irrational emotion. Why would you want to guide your decisions in such a manner?
