You can't receive Social Security if you relinquish your U.S. citizenship, so it would have to be a private pension.
I looked into Costa Rica, and they have similar requirements.

Sorry, that's not true. There is no requirement to be a US citizen to receive SS. In fact, many non citizens are receiving it right now. They made it that way so we could tax immigrants for not only income taxes but SS taxes as well. If we withhold SS, we have to pay it if they have enough qualifying quarters of payments.
I'd like to see a link to info on requirements for various countries. Requirements for permanent residency mainly. I know it's very hard in the Netherlands (Holland) to get citizenship or residency either one. Japan is one of the toughest.

Check out the link I posted previously, as it contains information on many different countries' immigration policies.
You may be right about Social Security. I had read that you would lose your benefits if you renounced citizenship. However, from what I could gather at the SSA website, collecting benefits as a non-citizen not living & working within the U.S. is dependent upon the number of credits you've accumulated prior to relinquishment. There are also some countries to which the SSA will not send benefits, so residents of those countries would have to maintain a U.S. bank account in order to receive benefits.

BEST way to get citizenship in any country is just to marry a native. C'mon, it can't be that hard, I bet after a year there in whatever country someone could find someone to love and marry.
And hell, tell them, "I give you $10,000 to marry me but we wont be really married, on the DL, after I become a citizen we divorce..."

I've had this plan for a while now but mine is more advanced.
Work as hard as you can for as long as you can putting all the money into a tax free high interest savings account. Eventually you can effectively live off the interest in some countries.
When your picking a country to live in, you don't want to goto hell on earth just because its cheap. You need somewhere you will be reasonably safe. Somewhere you will be happy with too.
I like the idea of inland portugal. A property can be had there for $60,000. They have decriminalised drugs and the property could also be rented for holidays if I needed to come back and earn more money at a decent rate of pay. Double whammy.
You will also find that things are much cheaper to buy in your new country so start trading them online with your old country to make good money.
If you just want to go super cheap, head to africa and buy a mansion and a load of armed guards for fuck all.

I forgot you were in the U.K. We don't have ISA's in the U.S. The only way to hold personal savings tax-free is through an IRA, and the interest rates are very low here for ALL cash accounts.

Sorry but not every country allows this. If you marry in Fiji you have to take your new bride or groom and leave the country.

The marriage loophole is definitely a way to go. I know several Brazilians and Americans that were able to get citizenship via that route.
