buy cheap cuts of meat and chicken. chicken legs and thighs are usually much cheaper than the white meat (and taste better.) you can buy a whole chuck steak for $9 or $10, maybe cheaper depending where you live, and braise it for 3 or 4 hours and make a big batch of pot roast. one will last me 2 or 3 days usually. look for whatever's cheap. lots of pasta, seasonal veggies and fruits (cheaper.) buy from farmer's markets if you have them in your area - they're cheaper and have better quality locally-grown produce.

A whole chicken is cheaper then one already cut up.

it can be cheaper or not, depending on where you live. in my area, whole chicken is around $1.50/lb, maybe a little less, but i can usually find drumsticks for like 69 cents/lb. thighs i can buy for a little over a buck, more if they're boneless. i like buying whole chickens if im gonna save the bones for stock or roast the chicken whole (my favorite way to cook chicken) but i usually make quick meals at the house so its quicker to cook a drumstick and thigh than a whole chicken.

Ive always cooked chicken with the whitemeat, do you guys have any recipes/suggestions for the thighs and drumsticks?
Also I fucking LOVE slow cooking. I think it would be perfect as well, turn it on before class and come home to food. Any good recipes you guys like?
Any other suggestions on saving money? You guys are awesome and I appreciate the help

Chicken Thighs are delicious.
Place chicken in water. Boil water. Then turn down to simmer. Let it simmer for 10 minutes - the longer the more tender.
Then cook in a pan with spices. Hot sauce. Etc.
Really fucking cheap. And delicious. Simmering them makes them tender and soft.
You can cook some noodles up put some mayonnaise on it. Mix it with some spices. YUM.

dried beans, rice, grains, fresh vegetables, etc.
i like to use ramen noodles, but throw out the seasoning packet and use real herbs, and stock, i also throw an egg or two in for good measure.
but definately beans, rice and grain. you can get all of the protein you need and then some from mixtures of the three.

I'm not sure how cheap this is but its a tasty recipe that's very easy. You can change the measurements to what you like and it requires very few ingredients. I usually leave out the scallions and sometimes leave out the celery.
Smoked Sausage Jambalaya
1/2 pound smoked pork sausage such as kielbasa 1 small onion 1 small red bell pepper 1 celery rib 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 2/3 cup long-grain white rice 1 1/3 cups chicken broth 1/8 teaspoon cayenne 2 scallions
Preparation
Cut sausage into 1/4-inch-thick slices and chop onion, bell pepper, and celery. In a dry 2- to 2 1/2-quart heavy saucepan brown sausage over moderately high heat, stirring frequently, and with a slot-ted spoon transfer to paper towels to drain. Pour off any fat from pan and in pan cook vegetables in oil over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until onion is softened. Stir in rice, broth, and cayenne and bring to a boil. Cover pan and cook rice over low heat 15 minutes.
Remove pan from heat and let rice stand, covered, 5 minutes. Thinly slice scallions. Fluff rice with a fork and stir in sausage, scallions, and salt and pepper to taste.
Pasta with a simple tomato or meat sauce is very satisfying as well. There are many ingredients you can experiment with so you don't get tired of the same old sauce with the same type of pasta.

Pork shoulder can often be found for a little over a dollar a pound at the grocers and when left in a slow cooker it makes great pulled pork on the cheap.
