Reishi monotub
    #8776411 - 08/15/08 05:05 AM (3 months, 19 days ago)

Thought I'd try something different: reishi in a monotub.

Culture received from Lipa, grown out on agar.

Wedges used to inoculate 2 jars of sorghum, maybe around 600ml - 700ml in size.

Spawned to chunky coir and gypsum. The spawn was virtually impossible to get out of the jars as it had over-incubated to such a degree that it had become the texture of leather crossed with rubber. Not fun. As a result the whole process was rather stressful and ended up being a mess. The tub is 53l, the spawn depth is around 10cm (4 inches). A pretty low spawn to sub ratio, but it presented no problems.

Left for maybe 10 days to colonise, when it was birthed the pins showing in the photos were already present. Seems like a ridiculously easy mushroom to grow.

Cool monotub tripsis. I can't wait to see what they do in there.  Hope the antlers get big and FAT!

Update. Photos from yesterday, so 4 days after "birthing" the tub.

The mushroom in the bottom left photo is growing right up against the plastic, moulded to the shape of the corner.

I like the way they look as if they're growing out of snow.

My camera is broken. Trust me, I want to post pictures but can't take any! Hopefully I'll be getting a new camera this week.

The fruits have turned out fairly small and the white growth ring has disappeared, so I'm pretty sure they're already finished. It's a disappointingly small looking harvest. Next time I'll be using a supplemented substrate. I don't think straight coir with gypsum was a good substrate choice.

Yeah, it's a shame. I've got 3 more jars of spawn ready. I might do bags, but I don't want to have to deal with the massive spore load.

I value the bush.

It's too cold anyway and not humid enough. Maybe in summer when all the bush has burnt out anyway.

Probably disturbingly well. I think it would do well on anything it's so damned tough.

Worowa enlightened me to the fact that we actually have native Ganodema species here.
