Man Steal His Own Urine Sample

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- A northwest Indiana man received a four-year prison sentence for stealing his own urine before it was drug tested.
 Porter County Judge Mary Harper sentenced Joseph Klinkman, 24, of Chesterton, to four years in prison and two more on probation for the burglary charge and another 168 days in Porter County Jail for violating probation on a previous drug offense.
The judge said because of the numerous chances Klinkman's been given, she intended to give him all six years in prison, but his lawyer, Gary Germann, made a good case for another chance.
"I question the likelihood of compliance with probation," Harper said. "Perhaps after you've sat in jail for some time, something will click with you."
After serving his time, Klinkman will be required to go into the Teen Challenge program in Illinois, a drug rehabilitation center.
"It is not easy to complete," Germann said.
Klinkman stole his urine and that of a friend in August 2007, breaking into the PACT office in Valparaiso. PACT works with prisoners on rehabilitation.
The two had taken Suboxone, a drug used by recovering heroin addicts, said Klinkman, whose case had been in drug court since June 2006 because he seemed likely for rehabilitation.
His previous conviction was for possession of a controlled substance, and he was sentenced to 30 days in Porter County Jail and 10 months probation in December 2005 before the transfer to drug court.
Klinkman said he wasn't involved with another jail trustee's moonshine operation and remained sober and finished drug programs, he said.
Deputy Prosecutor Cheryl Polarek said Klinkman had the ability to tell people what they want to hear all his life, and being intoxicant free in jail is what he needs.
Klinkman stole nothing else from the PACT office and PACT officials estimated the value of each urine sample at $6.50.
