Boletes all colors of the rainbow! Need help with IDs
    #8663012 - 07/21/08 12:25 PM (1 month, 7 days ago)

So I may break a few rules here and post some good pictures in place of an extensive list of features for each of these mushrooms. Hopefully, we can get a few easy (or easier) IDs out of the way and I can describe the features of the tough ones in more detail.

Habitat: All were found along the banks of a creek in Eastern PA.

Spore Print: I'm working on it, but they are a day-old and may not print well.

These all popped into existence concurrent with the terrible heat and humidity here. As soon as it hit the 90s and high humidity, I noticed that the boletes appeared.

Thanks for your help!

#3 Bruises blue on the pores

#4 (Bay Bolete?)

#5

#6

And here's how they look sorted, with a few others I know:

Thanks.

#1 is Tylopilus sp. maybe indecisus.

Tylopilus indecisus.

Amanitas kill more people than all other mushrooms put together, so an ID of some to be eaten must be correct. An ID based on a photo on the Internets is not reliable enough to potentially risk your life on. ToxicMan

I agree, #3 looks like B. bicolor to me too, with its bright yellow spore surface and a stipe that's yellow at the top and red at the bottom. #2 looks like B.  bicoloroides, which is reportedly poisonous. #5 also isn't something I'd eat.

Thanks for the help. I believe #3 is certainly B. bicolor.

#1 may be Tylopilus intermedius...have a look at http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~6898~gid~.asp The cap is a creamier-pink as opposed to the brown of indecisus

#2 Is strange in that its a red-capped bolete with cream pores and no blue bruising, which rules out B. bicoloroides...still no idea

#4 I dunno

#5 I dunno

#6 maybe Boletus leonis? http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~5626.asp

Gah, my head is spinning from looking at mushrooms and mushroom keys all day! No luck with the prints. Perhaps they must remain a mystery...

Don't feel bad.  Boletus don't print worth a damn for me either.
