Yep! Smoked grains can make or break a recipe.
Smoked grains can have flavors of carmel,peat,coffee,etc..

Look for a brew supply shop in your area.
It is easier to buy the specialty grains there.
On average specialty grains is used for 5% to 10% of the grist.

There is so may chooses, 2 row malt or 6 row malt, etc...
And done forget rice,maize,wheat,etc..

Now some of the local brewer companys will give you there yeast if you
ask them. Yeast is what makes the style of beer your making.

THANKS...

You can buy fresh whole hops or rhizomes for planting at;
freshops.com. I have;
Saaz,Cascade,Goldens,and Hallertauer.

The Cascade and goldens are easy to grow,they grow like they were ivy.

You can only purchase the rhizomes (roots) in the spring. So start
planing for next year. Of couse you need a place you can plant them.

How big of an area is that and  how much product (in finished beer) do you expect out of that crop if you don't mind me asking?

Holy cow man, that is a sick amount of beer you've drank :thumbup:

Obviously you've been out here to Colorado, as you've been to both Avery and Coopersmiths (2 of my favorites)

Thanks for all the info on wine and beer making.

Depending on how old the hop plant is.
The first and  second year you plant the hops you my get up to 2oz.
after that is when they really take off.

for example;My cascade is about 5 years old and I'm guessing I
should get 2lb.

The use of whole hops is: 1-2oz in a 5gal batch of beer.

Wow. So after even one year, you got enough to set yourself up big time. I'm looking to practice and make connections over the winter and then take a stab at this next summer. And I'd love to grow my own hops.

Hops need to be used fairly quickly(unless your making a lambic or other styles needing aged hops), mainly because the alpha acids in the hops deteriorate over time.  As they age, the aroma, flavor, and bitterness start to fade.

Yes! But after drying the hops, I vacuum seal then freeze!
Vacuum sealing alone kept in a cool dark place last a year.
When hops go bad, they will small like cheese!!!!

Holy cow man!!! You've even had Snake River and TommyKnocker butthead?

If that's "the"  TommyKnocker Butthead I'm thinking of, you must have been to my home town.

Oh, and thanks for the heads up on the hops guys.
